Our journey to Georgetown on the Malaysian island of Penang wasn't too bad. We left our guesthouse in Malacca at 8 am on Thursday morning and caught the bus to the central bus station. After waiting for around an hour our bus finally turned up about 10 minutes late and we jumped on to a better bus than we had expected. It was a double decker bus with plenty of legroom which was good considering we had a 7 hour journey ahead of us. We made it to Kuala Lumpur within 2 hours and we had decided to skip staying here as it was just another large city. We then had another 5 hours on the bus before we got to Butterworth which is across the bay from Georgetown. We then jumped on a ferry which took around 10 minutes and quickly found a taxi which took us to our hotel for the next 7 days in Georgetown.
After getting rid of our stuff in the hotel, we had a short walk around the local area and picked up some cheap food or tea. I had beef and rice and the piece of beef was potentially the smallest piece of meat we have both ever seen. We both had a laugh at it anyway then stocked up on some supplies, particularly water, at the supermarket before we headed back to the room as we were both tired after the day travelling.
On Friday, we decided to venture further out around the city. We walked down the main road, Jalan Penang, to the harbour front and went to Fort Cornwallis which is a British fort built in the 18th century. We had a good look around but again it was so hot that we were looking forward to some shade or air conditioning. We then scouted out a festival which is happening tonight for the last day of the Chinese New Year celebrations. We then took sanctuary in one of the numerous food courts where we both had differing versions of fried rice which were both really good.
After dinner, we had a quick McDonald's ice cream before we made it back to our room where we found that two of our best friends, Paul and Tracy had a little baby overnight in the UK. We are both over the moon for them and can't wait to see little Ava Grace when we get home.
