We weren't going to pick up our hire car until the day before we left but Dallas/Fort Worth is very spread out so we thought it is easier to use the car to get around and thank god we did. Caught the DART back to DFW airport to pick up our hire car, got offered an upgrade to a Chevy suburban, GMC Yukon or Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both the suburban and Yukon are massive and will take a **** load of fuel to run, we opted with using half a **** load of fuel and going for the Grand Cherokee. It is great, especially on the freeways here. We headed to the Fort Worth Stockyards historical district. This has been on travel shows and was recommended as a must do. Whoever recommended this must have been on drugs. We got there at 10am looking to have breakfast before looking around. Nothing opens until 11am. We wandered around killing time until breakfast and there really wasn't much to see. Everything was very tacky and not much significant historical information. Twice a day (11.30am and 4pm) they have a cattle drive down the main st. We hung around for the cattle drive. I was impressed with the size of the cattle horns and that was about it.This is probably a good site for kids. From the stockyards we headed towards the Walmart supercentre for the obligatory Walmart visit. The supercentres are huge. In California you can purchase liquor (spirits) from Walmart but apparently not in Texas. I managed to get a pocket juice 2200mAh battery pack for my mobile for $6 US. It is very small and fits in pocket. Handy for walking around without bag. I am finding with taking heaps of photos, using maps and other stuff gives me a battery life of about 5 or 6 hours. You can pick up Wrangler jeans for $15 or Wrangler shorts for $10. Didn't see any candidates for "People of Walmart" this time. We headed to the Grand Prarie Premium Outlets. The outlets were very quiet. We didn't go crazy at this one as there are a few more on the trip. Dallas/Fort Worth is ver spread out and the driving is mostly on massive freeways. Have seen a few crazy drivers but no different than Sydney We headed back to Dallas Downtown to drop off the car and head out to dinner. We headed out towards the West End historic district for dinner. Murphies law the one place we wanted to try for dinner was closed for a private party. Walking over towards there we walked past the DART stations, lots of police everywhere and Karen and I were the only light coloured people on the stations, they all looked like they were not waiting for the light rail. We had a drink at a Mexican Restaurants but decided not to have mexican again. They suggested I try a texan beer "Shiner Bock", it came in a stubby (bottle) and was very good so I had two. There was really nothing else that grabbed our fancy so headed back to Downtown. Walking past the DART line and station I was walking past two blokes and what looking like one handing the other a smoke from a cigarette packet, I looked over and saw the smoke recipient slipping a silver foil under the smoke packet. There were police within 10 metres of them and they were still at it. We eventually found a place for dinner and they had Shiner Bock on tap so I had another one, it was ****. I was very surprised to see so much difference between the bottled and draught version, oh well I drank it anyway.
