Max's Round the World in 36 days
Yet another 24h city stop - Washington DC. DC is only 40minutes by plane from NY and the flight was pretty enjoyable as the day was beautiful and sunny, apparently a hottest day for a while. The city impressed me already from the air as there seemed to be plenty of green space around. The view from the cab only confirmed that - vast parks and water reservoirs, trees on the streets etc.
Marta's is sharing the apartment with 2 girls (Italian and Moldovian) and they are all studying at the famous John Hopkins University (they all spent last year in Bologna as a part of the programme). The flat is located very centrally, close to all the main tourist attractions - so essentially close to the very centre of the world's politics. Capitol Hill & White House are only a walking distance away so obviously I could not miss them and Marta was quite keen in showing me what the city has got to offer. We therefore walked around the central areas and that was the best workout I have had in a while - I seriously could not budge a finger when we hit back home - and we still had a birthday party ahead!
Two of Marta's friends were turning 30 and they organised a big BBQ party in the backyard. We all got there a little late (considering that each one of us lived in Italy for some time so we all have had a proper training...) but I very quickly got to know a lot of people, and naturally forgot most of the names. The environment was very international but probably Italians were in the majority - I met at least 6 Italian people at a party in Washington! In any case, food was good, drinks were abundant (unfortunately in ALL varieties so we mixed white & red wine with beer, whiskey and martini - as far as I know all stomachs survived the challenge) and music would suit anyone. Chatting away and dancing but most & foremost - the company - all in all a great evening.
Coming to DC for a party was probably a little crazy idea but it was definitely worth it. It is amazing to meet a friend in a completely different setting, to become part of their lives for 1 day. It's great to realise that you may not see somebody for years and years but there would always be remain a sense of friendship, a special connection between you. That's what I extremely cherish with all my friends - spread around in different parts of the world - precisely this idea of knowing that they (you)are always there and can always be reached either in a hour of need or simply for a good party together. Thanks for all that!
