Max's Round the World in 36 days
This is going to be a quick one...I arrived in Los Angeles yesterday, stopping over for 2 nights. As I am sure everyone knows, I have never been particularly fond of the US and have had my immage of it - so it being my first time in United States of America I have to say that it actually worse that I have expected.
It may be the weather (it has been pissing down since yesterday evening and generally it is the coldest wather since I left London - been trembling yesterday night after Fiji climates), or the things that I have come across since the time I have arrived but, quite honestly, I hate it here and I have been counting the hours until I leave. First of all, I stay in this VERY dodgy area, close to the airport (cause I need to catch a 6.15am flight tomorrow)... When I arrived, there is this English (again..) couple in the dorm, and the girl told me that they went out to the supermarket just around the corner and there was this police car coming along, it stopped and asked them what were they doing there...The policemen told them it is too dangerous to walk in this area even in the daylight. Cool. I spoke to a shuttle driver today and he told me as well: 'My friend, I have been working here for 16 years, and listen to me - do not walk out anywhere after 7pm, cause it's trouble here every night - it's a drug area on the borders of the Mexican and black territory and they fight a lot..." So this is America, just like in the movies:) And apparently it is far from being the most dangerous area in LA - there are places here where even police would not go...and it's all about the drugs.
Apart from this damn hostel that I hate, I have an impression that LA is a HUGE MESS. Not only it is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) world city when it comes to the territory occupied, but it's a cultural melting pot as well. I have definitely seen more Mexicans and blacks than white Americans (there was no white person at the passport control and there were some 15 officers there).... LA is also named The Car City cause it has got so many freeways and it is impossible to get anywhere here without a car. There are as many car rentals as hostels/hotels in this city. Obviously I do not feel like exploring the city in my own car though.
Anyway, it would not be fair to say that it's all so bad and there is nothing to see. I did go on the LA by night tour with some shuttle yesterday evening - I though it'd be the safest option to see what the city has got to offer. So I went to the Kodak Theatre (the place where Oscars are held each year), have seen the hand prints of the famous actors outside the Chinese Theatre (both are on the Hollywood Boulvard) and finally we went up to Bevery Hills...There is an avenue there called the Rodeo Drive and it's a LA equivalent of Montenapoleone in Milan...And with huge respect to Montenapoleone, Rodea Drive makes a huge impression...All the fancy boutiques (many of them accept customers by appointment only), all the designer names you can think of in a Californian setting (palm trees) etc. Yes LA, you impressed me even though you're sooo bloody American. It's all about the movie stars and the money though - you see that and then the extremely poor downtown areas and it's just such a bloody contrast...
Besides from that, yes - people are BIG, junk food is all around (cinnamon rolls and cinammon apples are absolutely huge but I could not resist and helped myself to one, creps are almost as good as in France but double size...) - I have even seen, NEXT TO CANDIES, beef snacks - essentially like jellies but made of beef and I thought it was really really gross - made a photo:)
Internet is massively expensive, costs me like 5 bucks for 30min and will not let me uplod any photos so these will have to wait to Mexico...
Yes, tomorrow I am flying to Cancun via Denver (90% chance my bag will be lost on a connecting flight) and there will be a BIG encounter with Massimo...Hopefully, we will both make it without any problems and there has to be a big party cause I have last seen the b****** before Christmas:)
In this dodgy hostel there is a swimming pool outside and it's f***** cold (some 10-13 degrees probably), it has been raining and still there are 6 fat Americans swimming inside. I cannot take my eyes off them...The police and ambulance sirens are going off every minute so it adds to the atmosphere.
I will not be missing you, Los Angeles! 4 am wake up call tomorrow and there we go, Cancun get ready as Massimo and Max are just around the corner.
Take care, guys!
