Max's Round the World in 36 days
Hola amigos!
Now, this is really bad, so I ve just written a proper entry and the system has not saved it. The most annoying feeling in the world!!!!
Yesterday was a very good day as we decided to rent a car a day- Jeep Wrangler as we thought that would give us more flexibility and also fun! I must admit it was a bloody long day and I am pretty exhausted now after having done well over 300km and not having slept too much (that makes the reqriting of this entry even more annoying!)
We are still based in Cancun but it has to be said that Cancun is much more of a nightlife city rather then the beach resort. Having said that, there is a clubs zone some 10-15 min drive from the downtown area, where all clubs are located and the streets there are absolutely throbbing with music...It is strange but there is no decibel limit so you feel as if a gian speaker was attached to your head when walking on the street...A cool atmosphere! Anyway, if you re looking for beatuful Mexican beaches, the best place to go is Playa del Carmen (70km south of Cancun). After having visited the place the day before yesterday, this was our first stop on our trip!
A little drive on a sunny road, a bath in the beautiful sea in Playa del Carmen (see this entry's pix), a quick lunch on the beach and here we go again. We continued south for another 60km where we reached a place called Tulum - it's probably the most popular Mayan archeological site on the Yucatan peninsula. We did not really know what to expect of it before we got there but were both truly amazed. Not only are the ruins fascinating but their location on the small cliffs overlooking the sea just makes it an out-of-this-world spot. We had another bath in the sea and a little bit of a laugh at our beloved Americans (the way they dress, the way they speak and the kind of questions you hear them ask - ex. 'How can this be anyone's house with so much grass on it????'')
On our way back, we stopped in Playa del Carmen again (I love this place even though it is very touristic), had a bit of food and beer at a typical Mexican resto with live band (know Tequilla song?). The BIG problem is that both me and Massimo love eating and we spend an awful lot of money on food (we have realised that we spend 5 times more on food than we actually spend on accommodation!!) So essentially, after meals I cannot stop but feel like a pig and the pictures that you are presented have been selected very carefully as to hide the effects of overeating on our bellies... It is really funny that whatever we eat (and we only Mexican, leaving hamburgers to the Americans), Massi has to go first and tell me whether it is spicy...And obviosly, what is ''OK' for him, is f******** burning hot for me and I never ever had an idea that so spicy things even existed in this world before trying them with my poor tongue...
We hit back Cancun around 10pm, changed the clothes and drove into the club zone to relax a little bit there. Again plenty of Americans, tequilla & beer & some funky colourful drinks flowing everywhere but we did more of watching than participating...
It was a great experience to drive a car in Mexico...I thought that Italy was as bad as it gets when it comes to driving a car, but I was wrong! Road signs are only indicative here and i do not even understand half of them. No speed limit, cars taking over from both left and right sides and people & cars going in random directions in fron of you when you drive...I got into that spirit very quickly though...The funny thing about our Jeep is that it was squeaking whenever I would hit the breaks or take a rapid turn - the sound of a proper a racing car made by an old Jeep - and this would obvioulsy attract attention of passers-by. There was one time when I drove into the crossroads at a red light and, realising what I have done half way through, I suddenly hit the brakes and moved back as quickly as we came in...It was both dangerous and funny and we could not stop laughing at the whole scene, especially because of the sound effects that went with it! Anyway, had the police seen it, we would have been in a big trouble (even though that was probably quite normal for Mexican drivers...)
I am really enjoying Mexico, it's one of those places that have something in it. Great weather, great food, friendly people, all you need is here! Massimo has got really "mexicanised", it is so funny to see that after not having seen him for some time - it's really funny when sometimes he speaks to me in Spanish without even realising it! And i go 'what?????''
It's a hot Saturday morning, we are checking out from the dorm now and taking a bus and going up north (3 hours from Cancun) to a place/island called Holbox. We shall stay there for 2 days but have no idea what to expect. Seems very all right though!
Take care, saludos from both of us!
