Woke up to perfect weather today in the Eifel Hills of Germany. Great driving weather so filled the car up at 1.60 euro a litre (ouch) and did some basic sight seeing around the towns. Started with a trip to the Nurburg Castle which is in ruins. Not a lot is known about the castle unfortunately besides it being built in the middle ages. It is perched high on a hill overlooking the surrounding area and affords fantastic 360 degree views at the top of the tower. I wanted to stay longer at the top but there were millions of flies everywhere and I couldn't bare it any longer so retreated back to my car.
I went back to the B&B for lunch and discovered my computer playing up so spent most of the afternoon trying to fix that to no avail. At about 5:30 I headed back into town o tackle the Nurburgring as it was only open to the public for 2 hours today. There were cues down the road waiting to get on the track, cars and people everywhere. I worked my way to the front, swiped my ticket that I had purchased earlier in the day at the petrol station and took off for a 20km ride of my life.
The track is simply unbelievable, 73 corners, up hill, down hill, hairpins and straights, just amazing. I overtook a few cars in the process but was overtaken a lot more by other people. Lots of bikes passed me (although I did manage to pass quite a number of bikes) and serious race cars just shot right past me, so thrilling to encounter. My most embarrassing moment came when a honda civic shot past me at warp factor speed through some corners, he was wearing a helmet in the car and it did have roll bars but I mean c'mon, a 4 cylinder overtaking my V10 beast???
Saw a bike come off at one of the corners, he was ok though. In all the excitement I forgot to time my lap, I can't believe it. I had two laps that I purchased but only used one. The feeling of powering around a circuit was simply unbelievable, when I get back to Oz, I just have to give motor sport a try, I had the time of my life......
After the lap I stuck around and took a heap of photos of other cars at the circuit including Lambo's, porsches, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Nissan GTR's, Jaguars XCT (I think thats the model, the new supercharged jags anyhow) and litterally every other kind of car and bike make going around. Such a good atmosphere, a wonderful afternoon.
I'm going to go back tomorrow night to take some more photos, It may rain a little tomorrow according to the forecast so will have to wait and see how bad it is.
So far, I absolutely LOVE Germany, the countryside is so beautiful, the people are nice and the roads and second to none that I've experienced so far.
