The first stop on the South America wasn´t quite in the south, but New York was still a great place to spend Christmas. Things started off badly in Dublin (after a few quiets at our local the night before we flew out, patience was wearing thin) with a 4 hour delay to Heathrow. First we were slightly delayed due to the plane ariving late, then after boarding the wheel on the plane needed changing. Then we had missed our landing slot at Heathrow so had to wait on the runway a little more. Then fuel levels dropped too low so we had to re-fuel. Bah! Got a mini-upgrade to economy plus for the London to New York flight though so it wasn´t so bad in the end. Having come from Dublin I thought I would be prepared for the worst of the New York weather but when we exited the airport it was like getting slapped across the face with a big, frozen hand. So cold! And a little bit of snow, but nothing major. Went straight to the hotel that night, a little place called the Gershwin on 5th and 27th street. It was nice enough, but nothing too flash. Now I´ve been there now, I would definitely be looking for a place to stay in the West Village or Meat Packing district if I´m ever there again. It´s such a cool part of the city, heaps of nice restaurants, cafes, bars etc.
We spend the first few days wandering around the city, taking in the many sights and getting in a bit of shopping. Nothing very exciting though, just dorky travel stuff like hiking shoes and waterproof jackets. Not much place for fancy clothes in a backpack unfortunately! Went into Tiffanys as well. So sparkly and pretty! But so ridiculously priced too. Guess I´ll have to wait until I win the lotterly until I´m shopping there reglarly. A few days in, 4 of Dan´s mates arrived so the rest of the time was spend hanging out with them and seeing the rest of the sights. We visited all the obvious ones... Rockerfella plaza (at dusk. Great time to go becasue you get to see the city during daylight and nighttime), Times Square, Wall St, 9.11 site although it´s pretty much just a construction site now, Central Park, the Guggenheim, Statue of Liberty. The girls, of course, went on the Sex and the City tour and on boxing day, Dan and I went to see the Knicks play in Madison Square Garden. So much fun to watch! I was a loser and got myself a big foam finger and cheered my little heart out.
Christmas Day was great. We went up to meet Dan´s friends in their hotel for champagne before lunch, then went out to lunch at the Loeb Boathhouse in Central Park. It was fantastic! Right on one of the lakes in the park, we had a table right by the window and the sun was streaming in all day. Food was great, much wine was had, and after a good bit of wandering around we eventually found a bar that was open in the evening and stayed there for some cocktails.
Am in Argentina at the moment and still trying to figure out this blog thing, so am hoping I´ll be able to a) upload some photos soon, b) post another entry on Argentina and c) figure out how to send this blog to everyone. If you´re reading this, I´m one from three!
