Maddie Blanks' Travels
Our first walking city tour! We learned alot about the history of the city and had our first taste of 'pisco' a local spirit which takes some getting used to!
As we felt we had to give the pisco a fair try we went out in San tiago that evening with Sam, his housemate Regina and their friends Megan and Amanda. Thanks to their expert local knowledge we had an amazing night in the best club in town.
Awkward moments:
We had some miscreant youths with us on the walking tour that made us, for the first time, not so proud to be British, lest people should think of us all as one.
The journey home from the night out... Somehow, we all managed to get separated in the club so went hone separately. Sam and regina had been kind enough to let us stay at their house that evening but having just moved in, neither could remember exactly how to get there! This left the three of us walking round the streets with a 'I'm sure it was somewhere here' attitude. Gareth on the other hand managed to navigate himself to they're himself, in the process depriving many locals of their sleep trying to get someone to let him in!
Pisco, it turns out, is never nice. Nor was the twenty four bus journey we took to San Pedro the day after we found this out.
San Pedro was our last stop in chile, from which we did the tour into bolivia via the salt flats. Not the longest visit ever but definitely enough to have enjoyed it hugely and to wet the appetite enough to want to go again!
Highlights:
The moon valley, aptly named for the landscapes resemblance to the surface of the moon, was an amazing day. Everything echoes a million times there and we were lucky enough to see it a few weeks after a serious flood, bringing all the salt to the surface and making it all look like it had a light dusting of icing sugar (it hadn't though, we did try the salt!).
We bumped into the aussies nick and courtney again here and saw them at the subset over moon valley and managed to fool them into coming on the salt flats trip with us!
We also met three English girls in our hostel, Vanessa, jelly and penny. Mental but lovely, and most certainly will feature again in here soon.
Awkward moments:
Realising the ginger albino with dreads who worked in our hostel actually lived on the tin roof above our dorm and climbed a very unsteady ladder to get there everyday.
