Darren and Vicki's Travels
Hello is anyone out there?????
Well been a while since we heard from anyone - we are assuming that you are all enjoying the Scottish (British) weather and working hard?? Wanna let us know?
Well what have we been up to since I last updated the Journal.
Tuesday we went to Ayutthaya, Thailand's former capital. A lot of this is ruins as it was demolished when the Burmese invaded in the 1700's. This was absoutely stunning. Only one slight problem - Vicki forgot to take any of the camera's with her - i have some photo on a throw away camera - but it will probably take me a while to get these developed. Oh i do have some amazing photos on my mobile which i happened to have on me - we just can't seem to download them - aww well - guess you will all just have to visit to see what i'm on about:)
We visited a few temples, which again were awsome and the reclining Buddha which is well cool. Before we caught the boat back to Bangkok we paid a visit to the Bang Pa-In Palace (Summer Palace) which is still used for state visitors e.g. the Queen. As the Grounds were so big we got a golf buggy so that we could see it all. Within the Grounds there was Chinese Mansion which was gorgeous. The building only gets used once a year on chinese new year. Inside the Chinese mansion was a camel carving it was said that two camel's had died in the same exact place and the carving was made into a dragon flying over a town very amazing!.
Then a lesuirely boat trip down Chaopraya river. It was really relaxing after having to get up at 5:30 the last couple of mornings. We got to see how people live outside of cities which is very strange lots of rough looking river side houses then every so often you would a massive mansion, looks very out of place. That night tried to download the pictures to the web site but we are having a few techinal problems at the moment with regards to pictures. Will try our hardest to rectify these matters assp:).
Yesterday was another 5:30 wake up - didn't get to bed til 1am the night before as we were up drinking. So after dragging Darren out of his bed we head off to the river Kwai. First of all we visit the war memorial, then the war museum. We went over the bridge, which was well cool as there was a train comming over.
They have areas where you can stand in when the train is coming over. After the Bridge we went further down the line and caught the train and rode along the death railway for a bit. it is said that one man died for every sleeper that was laid. When you consider that an estimated 16,000 POW died there then a further 100,000 Asian labourers died while constructing this railway. You can see why it's called the death railway. It's a scary thought.
So on the train - was nice and relaxing.
After the train we went to an elephant camp. How cool is this - we went on the back of an Elephant. so been on the Elephant (Sida - i think was her name) for about 10 mins and he offers for me to go sit where he was - right on top of her front shoulders - well am dead scared but though why not? - i was sitting on Sida- she as well cool. She had kinda stubbly hair on her head - black which felt like broom bristles - not loads just a few - although i did notice that she had a few greys:) so we were on the Elephant for about 1/2hr in total - one of the best experiences that i have ever had in my life (and it is pushing on now, almost 26 eek!!) will never forget it ever - have the photos - just incase my memory starts to go:). Once we are off Sida - Darren feds her a whole loads of Bannana's - we got them off a couple of boys, who could have only been 7 max - should have seen them run when darren handed over the money. tried to get a photo of darren feeding her - one minute the bannan's are there the next they are gone - vanished - she gobbled them all up.
After the Elephant walk we went on a bamboo raft down the river. nice and relaxing. Bangkok traffic can be a bit hectic at times esp at night we got stuck in several traffic jams which in total lasted an hour so we got home about 7:30ish and we were both knackered.
So today we took it nice and easy, didn't get up to late-ish. Went and visited the reclining Buddha, which was massive - he had v, large and intresting feet - check out the pictures when i finally get them on the site. After the Buddha we went to the cinema to see pirates of the carribean 2. still haven't made my mind up about it - but johnny depp looks so hunky it's unbelieveable - and Kiera Knightly is quite hot as well.
right am going to shut up now and pack the bag.
hope everyone is well - will write again soonish - not too sure what the wifi situation will be like so if you don't hear from us in a bit - don't worry
Love to all
