Chris n' Mel in Thailand
Hi guys, in Chiang Mai now, north of Bangkok & thought we'd best update you on our last few days before we start to forget.
Since we last left you we've been all over the place - had a rather cultural day in Bangkok wandering around the main temples inc Wat Po with the massive reclining buddah statue (massive's an understatement - look at the pics) and visited the Grand Palace where the King used to live up until recently. Loads of impressive temples, statues and buddahs which are taken incredibly seriously out here, the Thais have the upmost respect for their King and religion, which is why you see me looking somewhat unrecognisable in the full length pants and shirt; a bikini top and hotpants just wouldn't have been appropriate.
Speaking of the King he has just had his 80th birthday and every day at 8am and 6pm celebratory music blares from tanoys along the street and every single Thai, and even tourist usually, stops in their tracks in his honour. There are also hundreds of people wearing and selling yellow t shirts in honour of his birthday too displaying the royal crest and there are literally pictures of him and his family everywhere.
Soo after a good few hours on my 'magical mystery tour' (about an hour of which actually involved seeing what we set out to and not just wandering the unsigned streets aimlessly in search of something other than hundreds of Thais offering to be our guides, which we adamantly refused, determined to find our own way), we decided we deserved a hard earned beer or six. And then, being on Khao San Road we ended up having said beers, filling our hands with many more shopping bags and me getting a henna tattoo, we even nearly ate crispy bugs...watch this space. (Don't worry mum and dad its not a real tattoo - it fades after a couple weeks :) )
Feeling a bit beered out later that night we found a place with a pool table and that sold the infamous Thai whiskey/rum buckets, so inevitably we took it as a sure fire sign we must play pool shots, a cracking game devised by us on holiday in Kavos, Greece last year. Here's how it works: each time one of us fouls we must down three fingers of lovely strong alcohol, the loser finishes the BUCKET!! The pics speak for themselves; I was on a roll and Chris was suffering..see the pain on his face??! I came out on top but he got some revenge after I passed the fine line between great pool playing when drunk and not being able to see the balls (either that or I didn't want to spend the next day's 13 hour train journey to Chiang Mai in silence... I'll let you decide ;)
Right well best be off, I've gone on too much as usual and the internet cafe's closing now - will be back soon to let you know about our overnight train journey unlike any other, mountain trekking, elephant riding, visting hill tribes and rafting down rivers!
PS. Thanks for your msg Lisa and hint hint guys you can leave messages for us from the links you receive! :)
