Alicia: Finally i can fill everyone in about Iquitos and the Amazing Amazon.
After the great sent off in huancayo was interesting to get back to travelling. When we'd arrived in Iquitos we were knackered and frankly was more of a culture shock. Looked like India with all the tuk tuks and bikes and was hit by it being actually warm( huancayo being in the mountains was freezing). When we got to the hostel we met some Brits who took us to this awesome bar which turned out to be someone's house on the river with beer and hammocks. Was brill.
Next day we were picked up for our Amazon adventure and taken by speed boat up the Amazon then off to Sinchicuy River where our lodge was. Our group was a mix of Spanish, Hungarian, Swiss and Brits so was great. The first day we were taken to meet a jungle tribe and got our faces painted, danced and got to practice using a blow gun. I was rubbish but mike made the board and brought one to take home. Not sure it'll get through customs because of the piranha teeth tho :S in the afternoon we went on a little walk to visit some communities living in the amazon and met a shaman who swore by using Ayawaska ( a medical hallucinogenic) then headed back to the lodge for some lush food and pitch black darkness at 6 because there's no electricity which made the giant bug we found in the bathroom even more scary.
On the second day we took the boat out for some dolphin watching- they have grey and pink dolphins there but got to see the pink ones which was great, we then went further up the Amazon to primary jungle to see this giant sacred tree. Was just like Home Tree in Avatar lol. Then in the evening was our turn go have a night bug walk. Was bricking it especially when the guide asked us to switch our torches off to listen to the sounds of the jungle. Was hideous but survived thankfully with only a few mozzie bites.
The third day we went to a animal reserve and got to see and hold some parrots, monkeys and an anaconda! Mike made a friend- a female monkey who hopped out of the tree to start licking and picking his hair. Gross especially as she seemed to have a prolapse which hung on his shoulder :S in the afternoon we went piranha fishing which was surprisingly difficult seeing as they're supposed to be ravenous all the time and the group only got 2 fish between us- me and mike got none which is just as well seeing as we don't like fish.
The next day we got up early for some bird watching with mike paddling in the canoe badly. Didn't capsize tho which was good. Got to see some cool birds but got bright too soon do some of the birds had already gone. After some food we headed back to Iquitos for some lush food and pisco sours which I think we're addicted to now. An early flight back to Lima the next day then another early start on the Sunday took us to Cusco for the start of our long awaited Inca Adventure :) ...
