Rhodes, Greece
Well, I've just returned from Rhodes, one of the Greecian islands. It has plenty of history, and believe it or not, has only been back in the hands of Greece for 60-odd years!
I went with my other half, Jamie, who is very much into Greek mythology, and the history, so he got himself involved in that...I just took pretty pictures!
We only spent a week there, in the tourist town of Kolymbia at the Golden Odyssey hotel. On our last day we even had a go at the fish spa down London Rd. All the roads in Kolymbia are titled after the capitals of the countries in the European Union. Then you've got Eucalyptus St, which coincidentally is lined with eucalyptus trees. It's so beautiful!
We spent an afternoon in Lindos (the picture is the view from the car park by Lindos (Lindos is pedestrianised). Lindos is like a wedding cake - you have the Acropolis (the temple of Athena) at the top, the white stone buildings nestled in the middle, the trees and shrubbery, then the beach and sea at the bottom. I must admit...I HATE stairs, but I climbed to the top to see the Temple of Athena (and Apollo in Rhodes town) for Jamie.
My special trip out was to the Seven Springs (Epta Piges) about a 4km walk from our hotel. It is absolutely stunning! One of my favourite places in the world. There's a tunnel there that goes beneath the road. It is pitch black and you scrape your head on the top. You can feel the rushing water beneath your feet as you walk through (cold, but a lovely cold). You see the end, and the end leads out to a large lake. You then follow a path to the left that leads to the waterfall made from the dam.
Now for Rhodes town. You may wish to stick to the Old Town (you will get lost, but you'll find the most quaint shops and tavernas). The old town is surrounded by a huge wall. It's just so lovely. The new town is not the best, just full of modern shops and hugely overpriced. However, if you head to the top of the town you will find the Aquarium. You will see a building, however this is not it. There are some stairs to the right that lead down to the aquarium. You'll at first think that it is tiny, however there is a tunnel that goes underground and this is where you will find the sealife. You will undoubtedly hit your head on the ceiling. But the lighting and rocky-ness is amazing.
Prassonissi is a definite must-see. It is on the southern-most tip of Rhodes and is a peninsula rocky island. During low tide you can walk aross the sandy path to Prassonissi to see the lighthouse (however we could not do so). As you stand on the sandy path facing Prassonissi you will have the Mediterranean Sea to your left, and the warmer and rougher Aegean Sea to your right (one of only a few places you can see two seas meet).
