The day started with everyone lying in and recovering after the long journey yesterday. We hit the streets at 9.30 and started to make our way to Times Square. We had some waffles with Strawberries and yogurt at caffe benne. Delicious with a large coffee and all for $30. The weather was still cold starting at -2 but during the day it rose to plus 4.. Almost warm. There were clear blue skies.
Times Square was quite busy with all the neon signs. Martin wanted to visit toys r us which was huge and had a fairground ride in the middle, enough toys for Father Christmas to supply the world and a full size animated dinosaur. In addition to this there were Lego models of Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building. He also went in the disney store which was pretty but I did have to tell him we had no small children.
Escaping there went in some designer shops. We had to look up at the skyscrapers all the time
Had some lunch at cafe duke which was very strange selling cooked food by the llb.
We had pasta and coke.
Making our way to the Empire State Building we avoided all the sightseeing sellers..very annoying. We had purchased fast passes to avoid the queues. It felt wrong to go in front of all the people and get in the lift first. Getting up to floor 86 was confusing but once there we were speechless. Wow wow wow........ There was not many people and we had clear uninterrupted views for miles. The sheer size and amount of buildings was massive and gave lots of photo opportunities. You are outside and can walk around the viewing platform to see 360 degrees. We then took the lift up to the highest viewing point on the 102 nd floor. This was much smaller and enclosed behind glass. From here you could see Central Park clearly and it gave a longer distance view.
We then decided to see maceys the largest store in the world. It was very mainstream with lots of expensive designer things so not to my taste, had a Starbucks drink there as at this stage all very tired.
Walked back to hotel to collapse and get some energy back for Matilda on Broadway.
Caught a taxi to broadway to see Matilda as tired from all the walking during the day. We some how missed dinner and when we saw the queues to get in decided to join them. The theatre is the oldest in New York and called the shubert theatre. Very mixed architecture and the seating is arranged in steep tiers. We were on the very top one. Only seats we could get and the cheapest. Although it appeared a long way from e stage it was a good view. The theatre was a sell out and all seats were filled.
Matilda was a very good musical with lots of kids and songs and some humour. They were very energetic and talented. Some two and. Half hours later it finished with lots of encores. Excellent show and good to say we had been to broAdway.
Due to the thousands of people emerging from the various theatres we walked back. We stopped at a macdonalds for some food and a rest stop!!! Never so glad to see macdonalds. Got back to hotel at 11.30 tired and achy after a great first day.
