I have left Singapore now but feel I managed to see quite a lot of my city during my time there. The first day I started out on foot from little India into the centre of Singapore. I decided to go to a place called the battle box which was an underground communications typr place during the second world war. They had put all of the rooms back to how they would have been and told the story of what happened the day Singapore fell to the Japanese. I wanted to see it and found it quite interesting as I had read a book whilst I was away which was all about a family living in Singapore during the war and then being sent to the prisoner of war camps. I then strolled on down to the Quay and decided to take a boat ride along the river. It was a good way to spend some time and exaplained a lot about the different areas along the riverside and how they have been developed. By this point in the day I had walked an awful lot and to save my feet I decided to figure out there underground system and go home that way. I was very impressed its a lot posher than the London underground. They had sliding doors before the tracks which only opened when the train was in the station. I guess this solves the problem of people jumping in front of trains or falling into the track. I found my way back very easily. I was staying in little India which is not really as nice as the rest of Singapore. Its the kind of place where you get used to walking on the roads because there are stalls and random things that get in the way on the pavement. There was constant traffic all the time and I got stared at a lot which didnt seem to happen in the rest of Singapore. Still it was nice to be somewhere that was so different to being in England. There were some places that you went to in Australia that apart from it being hotte could have been back in the UK so Ive been looking forward to coming to Asia where its previous obvious that Im a long way from home.
The next day I set out to one of the main markets in the city. It was absolutely packed and massive with people everywhere. I couldnt understand why it all seemed so much busier than the day before then I realised it was a Saturday and it kind of made sense. Most of the time I have no clue what day it is until I double check my calender for booking a bus or a flight. The market had a lot of things to buy but I decided to hold off for Thailand as Singapore is not nearly as cheap as the rest of Asia. Whilst I was in the shopping area I also made my way into one of the big malls. This was mostly to take advantage of their air con as it was very hot but the shopping mall was impressive. The poeple of Singapore definately like to shop.
After a not very good nights sleep due to snorers in my dorm room I made my way over to Sentosa. This is one of the island off Singapore that has been developed by an American to make it into a theme park/day out island. They have imported beaches for you to lay on and lots of rides. A lot of stuff was expensive so I chose to go to a free animal show. It was good and the guy that was hosting it was pretty fun but I think I might be losing some of the magic of seeing animals in a show like that. They had a sea eagle flying around which I had seen in the wild flying around our boat on the whitsundays and they had a lizard/gheko (not sure which) that I had seen walking across a car park right in front of us in Fraser island. I guess once you have seen animals in the wild its not quite as exciting the see them in a show.
My last day before setting of to Kuala Lumpur I headed off down to have a look at raffles hotel just because I kind of felt like I had to whilst I was there. It was pretty impressive and although you couldnt get into the hotel there was an arcade that you could walk around. I could well imagine all the posh people years ago staying and going for drinks there. I would have liked to have stopped and had a Singpore sling but it was way out my price range. I then went to the train station to get my sleeper train to Kuala Lumpur. This was a new experince for me so I was pretty excited. We went through passport control and then all piled onto the train. I had a top bunk and although pretty narrow it was comfortable enough. The only thing I wasnt sure about was what to do with my rucksack. I stood and watched other people and they all seemed to be putting their bags onto their beds so I followed suit and then settled down in my bed with by bags at the bottom. Its a good job im not very tall. Just as I was feeling like I could fall to sleep they came and got us up and made us get off the train to go through another passport control. Im not really sure why we had to go through two they didnt seem to do anything different than the first lot had done. I then got back onto the train got comfy again and watched us pass along the causeway into Malaysia before falling asleep. I slept pretty well only waking up a few times but it didnt feel like morning when they came and woke us up as we were arriving in Kuala Lumpur. The hostel I had been planning on staying in when I got here was full so I walked along the street until I found another one. As it is so much cheaper here I could afford a room to myself which was such a luxury after sharing dorm rooms for the last 4 months. The only downside was that it only had a fan not air con so I had a pretty warm night. I spent some time exploring Kuala Lumpur but I think I have had enough of big cities at the moment so I have booked a flight to go to Phuket in Thailand tonight. I was planning on going overland into Thailand as that is the cheapest way but last month they changed the visa rules so you only get a 15 day visa if you cross in overland as oppossed to the 30 day one you get if you fly in and used to get overland. Slightly annoying but at least I get to have an hours flight instead of hours and hours sat on a bus.
