Day 11
Slept in this morning in no rush whats so ever. We're only an hour and a half south of Berlin so we've decided to slow things down.
The weather is warm, around 25. We walked the streets and explored parks of Leipzig but to be honest it's starting feel like more of the same. It's nice to see families out and about using the parks and publics spaces as they're intended. It would be nice if Australia had a similar philosophy on creating better public places. People seem fitter and healthy hear because they can walk and cycle with ease from place to place. I have noticed however that a lot of people of all ages still smoke and in restaurants too.
We hit the road around 2pm and drove into Berlin just in time for peak hour traffic. I'm completely confident on the roads now and have no issues driving in the busy cities or on the Autobahn. It's great to know that I can now drive on the opposite side of the road without worry. However once arriving we have no need for the car for the remainder of our travels so we dropped it off two days early to avoid paying for hotel parking.
We've booked three nights at the Park Inn at Alexander Platz, the most central location in Berlin curtesy of Kincrome. It's nice to settle for a few days before travelling again.
Berlin is completely different to any other City I've seen in Germany. It's spread over an enormous are and is alternative in culture unlike Bavaria. It's a welcome relief and I can't wait to explore the famous sites in the coming days.
Ryan and I were given directions to this eclectic bar called Holzmarkt which is a 2km walk from our hotel. We've already covered around 10km on foot today and legs are feeling it. We took the long way to the bar which is situated on one of the many dirty Berlin river systems. The bar was nothing like I expected and reminded me of a children's adventure playground made from scrappy bits and pieces placed together with planning at random. It was a great spot to have a few beers and watch the locals roll in after work.
Before dinner we went up to the sky deck in our hotel and enjoyed the views of the city over a beer.
For dinner we decided to head to the Hofbrauhaus near our hotel. We were both up for a full pork knuckle and the Hofbrauhaus did not let us down. It was a massive effort to get through the whole thing but I was determined to do it. Ryan piked 3 quarters through (which was still a fair effort) so I made him do a shot of evil snapps. The band was playing all the classics Ive heard many times at the Cuckoo, even the elvis covers were the same.
We headed back to the hotel bar for a couple of cocktails before I called it a night.
