After the excitment of the Whitsundays our next task was to find a fun location to celebrate Louise turning 1/4 century. Our first idea was to go to the full moon party at Magnetic Island but unfortunately we'd left it a bit late and Townsville wasn't as lively as expected. We continued the road trip upto Mission beach where the campsite was great, we played tennis and I think it's safe to say that had anyone from Wimbledon been there, you would definitely have seen us competing next year! We headed into town for some birthday research but decided it really wasn't good enough for our Louise. It was clear that really Cairns was the only option left for birthday celebrations.
We got up early in Townsville to do presents and cards - hilariously, a couple of her friends had sent 10 pound notes in cards!! Hahaha how we laughed I can tell you. The fact it was 2 separately only made it funnier.
We carried onto Cairns and found a lovely all girls hostel to stay at and had birthday brunch - our first fry up of the trip and we thoroughly enjoyed every ounce of fat it had to offer. Then, what better way to allow digestion than to sunbathe by the Lagoon for a while before cracking open the bubbly and starting on chocolate cake?!
As it was a special occassion, Lucy opened a hair salon and made us all look beautiful enough for our Princess crowns so we could head on out to the meat market that is the Woolshed!
Needless to say, we did not move the next day and were not fit to continue the road trip just yet!
The road trip continued, after a day of rest, on to the Atherton Tablelands where we went to the Crater Lakes National park and saw the Cathedral Fig Tree that was massive!
We stopped at Lake Barrine for the rainforest walk and then went swimming in the freezing cold Lake Eacham. There they had a turtle lookout and we did actually see little turtles that apparently breathe through their bottoms - amazing.
At the campsite we tried our hands at chopping wood - Chris Hollins would not have been impressed at the attempts! Needless to say, we didn't have any firewood. The campsite was funny though with the chickens (and their babies) running around and the goat tied to the washing line and these wierd duck things with their brains on the outside that hissed and Lucy decided to chase!
We spent some of the evening at a real Aussie Country pub where the villagers had spent the entire day in a pig hunting competition so they all seemed pretty excited. It was quite a funny place really, how you'd imagine it to be.
Anyway, we went onto Daintree where you maynot believe it but we had a bit of tent drama in that, 1 of the 2 poles snapped!! I know what you're thinking...how can one group of girls have so many tent issues. Fear not though, we had Gaffa tape at the ready and managed to put up a rather special looking tent (we later got a full refund form autobarn as they didn't check it! ha)
Before all this though, we stopped at Mossman's Gorge and where we'd thought the other lake was cold - this was something else. Louise is quoted as saying,
"now I know exactly how Jack felt in Titanic", haha of course you do Louise.
Seriously though, very cold.
Next day we caught the ferry across the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation - The ferry was over half the width of the river which we though was funny.
Naomi, Lucy and I went on the Rainforest Discovery walk which was amusing due to the phone guide thing they gave us, especially when the one me and Lu listened to started talking about a beautiful golden globe found all around that area - we thought it was talking about a bird til it went on the talk about the really strong web used in fishing!!! Argh. Didn't see one though thank goodness.
We went to the Bat house to meet the beautiful sunshine - a fruit bat, so cute and then me and Lucy went for a walk where we stumbled across a nice looking lagoon which is apparently home to a few wild crocodiles. You'd think we'd have left swiftly but we stayed to see if any would come out - sensible! They didn't but we kept hearing things so moved on.
In the morning Naomi, Lucy and I went sea kayaking but that'll have to be a separate blog as there's too much to tell!
