29th March: This was the start of our first day at Inle Lake. After our exerting hike we decided to take it easy and hired bikes for the day to explore the lake, and particuarly a water village. We had a lovely cycle through the local countryside passing villages and only the odd ox and cart along the way. we arrived at the water village and had to walk along a beautiful long teak bridge to get to the village passing rice and tomato fields along the way watching the locals tending to their crops. They all kept laughing and waving at us! At the end of the bridge we met a guy who took us on his boat round the village as the whole thing is on water, there is no other way of seeing it. It was such a lovely place and amazing to see how they mange to live on the water, there was a local bar and restaurant, a lot of the houses had satellite TV and a local store. All the kids were rowing around the waterways as young as 8 or 9 and the workers in the fields were wearing the traditional cone hats for shade mixed with football shirts which was funny to see. The bike ride home was a lovely as the way there and we spent most of the way smilling and waving at passing trucks full of locals who thought we were hilarious!.
The next day we arrange a boat trip round the lake and woke up to pouring rain which was not a good start! From the port we visited a local market which was fun but a bit hectic with hawkers. In the afternoon we visited the Indein Temples which were similar to Bagan but much smaller and closer together. A lot of them were in ruins and were being re-built but in a modern way which was a shame. The jorney back was great as the rain had stopped so gave us a good look at how the people on the lake lived. Monks having their evening wash in the river, kids running along side our boat asking for pens and so desperate they were jumping in and swimming after us, men washing their precious buffalos and fishermen pulling in their daily catch.
This ended our trip to Mynamar in a perfect way and the next day we travelled back to Yangoon to fly to Bangkok.
