My travels...
Well, we got up today at 5am to catch the bus to take us to the boat which would take us to Phenom Pehn!
The boat took 5 hours and it was amazing. We sat on the roof the whole way. As we sailed through the lake to Phnom Pehn we saw some amazing things. People actually live on the lake in little mud houses on stilts. There were plants floating across the whole lake and trees somehow managed to grow there to.
It was a hot day. The sun was beating down on the boat with full exposure. We got sunburnt, but only slightly as we put on suncream.
The first part of the journey was wet and cold, the water kept spraying up at the boat and it was absolutly freezing after a while. But the second half was dry and very hot, loads of people were sat on the roof too, most sunbathing.
Iain lost his sunglasses, they fell from his shirt into the river, which is a shame.
As we pulled into Phnom Pehn everything changed. The land around us became much more built up. When the boat docked we were met by people asking if we wanted a taxi. One even came into the boat pestering us.
We walked out and got a tuktuk to take us to various guesthouses and we ended up in 'The bright lotus', $10 a night, clean, en-suite and also a restaurant and 10% off of food.
After setting ourselves up there, we took a walk into town where we found loads of nice places to eat. We stopped off in a place called 'The Jungle' and had spaghetti and tomato sauce (not very Cambodian, but very very nice).
We walked on and came across a place that show films about Polpot and landmines. We watched the landmine film which was really good. Apparently there are still 6 million land mines in Cambodia. It's scary, but as long as we stick to the 'beaten track' then we shall be okay.
We ventured into the market eventually which was an experiance, it was awful. As we walked past we saw fish in bowls, loads and loads of fish. To our utter disgust and suprize we saw some fish moving, they were still alive. It got worse, as we walked on we saw a fish which had been gutted and it was all sliced up...moving its fin! Then, we walked on and saw a fish tail with no head flapping about. It's so disgusting.
We also saw some chickens all sat on the floor, they looked ill and fed up. There we some on the table above them which had been skinned and were dead. Everything stank, the meat was covered in flies.
Well, we made our way back to our hostel and now we're here in the internet cafe which actually isn't too bad. Apart from my computer doesn't have a cd drive, a usb port or msn, but it has a webcamera, fast internet and a good keyboard. So I am not complaining.
We're going for a meal in a traditional Khmer restaurant after this!
