Afetr staying in a tepee like tent at Byron I went on to stay in an old converted railway carriage at railway square in Central Sydney. Arrived after a 13.5 hour night bus down from Byron at about 10.30 on Tuesday morning. My flight to New Zealand was earley Saturday morning so had three and a half days to fit in as much sight-seeing as possible...
Tuesday afternoon I walked down to Darling Harbour through China town - stopping for Sushi on the way above Paddy's markets. Harbour was lovely and had some nice restaurants and the biggest Imax cinema in the world! (Didn't go however as I wanted to see 'haunted house' which was only on on Friday and saturday nights!) I did go to the aquarium tho which was pretty good - great shark exhibit. Had an early night on Tuesday as hadn't slept prperly for nearly two days!
Wednesday I went on the Ferry to Taronga Zoo - great day and got some amazing pictures of the big cats! Also saw my first and only Funnel Web spider - the male is the most poisonous spider in the world and if bitten you'r dead in under half and hour! It was in a box so wasn't in any immediate danger but still gave me the collywobbles! Australians think thats a brilliant word by the way - i've also taught them what it is to potter around and what faffing about is - that made them laugh (maybe at my expense!) After the zoo I went over to the Opera house (Didn't do the tour as was bored with waiting and I wanted to walk through the Botanical gardens to Mrs Macquaries chair. Its the only place that you can get a photo with both the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in it. Was quite a walk away so got the tube back to central rather than find a bus stop which turned out to be a good call as the roads were jammed with rush hour traffic.
On Thursday I went on a day trip to the Blue Mountains - our first stop was a wildlife park where I had a snake put around my neck! Also had a Koala wee on my foot but decided it might be good luck?! Always got to look on the bright side eh?! Drove up to see the three sisters - a pretty impressive rock formation (pics to be uploaded shortly) then went on a sky-ride thing across a great big gorge before getting the steepest train down the mountain (over 52 degree track at some points! Had a walk about in the forest at the bottom before getting a cable car back up. Enjoyed them all quite a lot and had by this time hooked up with two other single girls who were on the trip too. We went to a famous sweet shop in the mountain town of Leura which stocked things like dip dabs and nerds and all sorts of other things I haven't seen for years! Finished off the day with a trip through Sydney's Olympic stadium although we couldn't go in the main stadium as Kylie was in concert there that night!
Friday was designated as my beach day and true to form dawned cloudy and windy!!! I got the train out to Bondi junction and then a bus to Coogee (pronounced like Cugee - not like ben's old dog!) Walked the cliff path from Coogee beach to Bondi which was supposed to be lovely. It was quite nice but as I was walking past all the houses and residential areas it wasn't a patch on anything in North Devon! Greencliff anyday Matt!!!
Came back to the hostel late afternoon with pink shoulders from the sun and a mountain of washing to do before I flew out to New Zealand the following morning. Met some nice people who'd moved into my dorm including a guy who lived where they filmed last of the summer wine! Never found out his name but he and I and two others spent my last evening in Sydney chilling out and chatting in the carriage - didn't sleep till late so was pretty tired when I woke up at 5.30am to get to the airport!
Bye bye Australia...
