So its been an amazing few days on magnetic island. I travelled with a German girl called Julia to magnetic island which was rather dull (not Julia, the journey). We arrived at the port and we were joined by an English girl called Jen. The hostel was lovely, it is made up of lots of little cabins all tucked away in between the trees and right next to an animal sanctuary. The first evening we walked to the beach and watched the sunset before heading to the town in search of a meal and some entertainment in the form of cane toad races that had been recommended to us. The food was lovely, but the cane toad racing, wasnt as they were unnecessarily cruel to them, flinging them through the air by a leg and other such things. We stayed for all of 5 mins before becoming too enraged by the cruelty, so we moved to a lovely park and sat there chatting in the company of a few wallabies and a possum.
After a reasonably restful night we went to the animal sanctuary which was amazing, made all the better by the beautiful weather. We got to cuddle a koala called Noah, hold a snake, a crocodile, be kissed by a cockatoo among other highlights. We all came out on a real high and went to a lovely little cafe by the bay for lunch. After lunch we met up with two other english girls from the hostel and took ourselves off on a long trek around the coast for a bit and then up to the fort. We were lucky enough to see 3 wild koalas en route which added to an already amazing day. We rounded it off with some well earned fish & chips sat on the beach before crashing for an early(ish) night.
After dealing with the formalities of leaving the hostel etc etc we went to the home of the rock wallabies on the coast armed with little tubs of wallaby food. The wallabies all came down and ate out of our hands. While feeding one, a little joey's head suddenly popped out of her pouch.....so cute! The rest of the day was rather uneventful, involving a bus trip and checking into a hostel at Airlie Beach.....not much to report. Off on my whitsundays trip in a bit.....hoping the weather stays this good!
