Day 70 - Thurs 8th Jan - Akaroa
Mary had taken the day off work today so that we could do something together before I left. We went to Akaroa for the day which is a couple of hours drive from Christchurch.
We had been hoping that I would be able to do swimming with dolphins there, but we arrived about lunch time and they were all fully booked for the afternoon. So instead we booked ourselves of a boat trip along the peninsular.
The boat trip was really good, took a couple of hours and the coastline was really beautiful. And finally - DOLPHINS!! YAH! They were Hector dolphins which are the worlds smallest and rarest. We saw them about 3 or 4 times and each time there were about 3 of them. We also a penguin swimming by the side of the boat like a rocket which was great to see after seeing on the beach.
It had been incredible hot that day but luckily there was strong breeze on the boat to help cool it down a bit. When we got back to Mary's house in Christchurch it was still absolutely scorching and we discovered that it had been the hottest day on record there and 40 degrees!!
The weather in NZ is certainly changeable, and they do say that you can have four seasons in one day there.
