the concept of southern hospitality that we are familiar with in America is also applicable to the Netherlands. the people here are amazing. today I didn't wake up until 11, but as soon as I woke
up, we went out. our first stop was the restraunt guusje works at. there we had coffee and croissants. plain coffee was
served in little tea cups, and specialty coffee drinks were served in tall glass cups. it was pretty to see the layers of a latte. next we walked around the center of Maastricht. there were a lot
of Catholics in town because there is some sort of big procession going on here. we went in to one catholic church and it was beautiful and old, but scary at the same time. it was really dark and gothic. we got out of there and went to a great restaurant for lunch and had such good food. after that, we left the city and went to the dutch countryside. we went for a walk along some trails and saw all of the old dutch building which really take your breath away. we walked past a bread mill that is still in operation. I saw the real deal. then we went to a little country restaraunt that was really beautiful and had a cheese plate and olives. my Dutch countryside experience could not have been any more ideal.
tonight we had a big family dinner. sjra made a Dutch dish with red cabbage, meat, and potatoes topped with apples. it was so delicious. we also had homemade applesauce with a pastry type thing in it. for desert we had apricot tiramisu. I am going to gain 100 lbs in Europe. guusjes entire family was there... her brother and his girlfriend, her boyfriend and her best friend, and sjra and his wife Ellen along with her two daughters. everyone has been so kind and wonderful. I feel really spoiled because everyone speaks English. I listen to the Dutch conversations, and then someone fills me in. literally everyone speaks perfect English. some people think they don't, but I am continuously amazed at how well people do know English. I would love to learn Dutch and come back here to visit again. my stay here has exceeded my expectations for sure.
