Started off in Burlington in a thunderstorm that had gone on most of the night, streets running with water, and drove 300 miles south-east down to Hyannis, where we are tonight.
En route, we saw evidence of what the weather men are telling us, that New England is now in the grip of an unseasonal heatwave with temperatures up to about 85 degrees:it was certainly in the 70s when we stopped at lunchtime. However, as we got closer to Cape Cod, the evidence dwindles away along with the temperatute. It's about 40 here, grey and foggy with a horrible biting wind. They say it'll improve on Wednesday, which is of course the day we leave.
After the long drive we did manage a bit of a toddle round the harbour, with a stop-off for a Guinness (me) or Diet Coke (Chloe). The pic shows Chloe framed by some suitably monochromatic boats in a cold windy harbour.
This time we're staying in a Radisson, which is a bit posher than the average motel and actually has a restaurant, although we'll give it a wide berth except at breakfast time. Still doesn't spare us some of the abiding eccentricities of American motels, though:horrible in-room coffee, a habit of placing us (even though the hotels are all largely empty) as far from Reception as Toulouse airport places the easyJet flights, repellent hall carpets and inescapable soft-rock music playing under the portico where you drop off your luggage.
According to Trip Advisor, Hyannis's best restaurant is in a shopping mall a mile away:Ollie will be pleased to know it's called Not Your Average Joe's. Any resemblance between Vince Vaughn and the maitre d will no doubt be entirely coincidental.
