Things I discovered today:
- Flamingos also come in orange
- There is demand for Waitrose muesli and chopped tinned tomatoes among the affluent in Hong Kong.
- It is cheaper in a restaurant to have your drink hot than cold.
- There are millions of skin creams available here but sun lotion is surprisingly difficult to find.
Yesterday we arrived at about 9am. The hostel is basic but seems to be alright. We both fell asleep at about 1pm, not waking until about 6. We went out walked along the Avenue of the Stars, getting our first view of the harbour and central skyline at night. Then we walked back into Kowloon and found some food at a chinese restaurant. Then we went for a walk in Kowloon Park, at night. It's a very nice park and at night it was peaceful and felt safe with security patrolling, compared to British parks at night! There was a lake with flamingos, right under the tower blocks. It also surprised me that most shops, including high end fashion chains, are open til about 10:30pm.
Today we took the Star Ferry across to Central and wandered among the huge buildings. We walked up the hill to the Botanic and Zoological Gardens. Another lovely park, peaceful and with monkeys, birds and tortoises in enclosures. Walking up there was tiring so we stopped for ice cream. The locals are wearing wool jumpers and coats while we are sweltering in t-shirts.
The tram is out of service this week so we are on a very crowded replacement bus heading down from the peak. My feet hurt. I challenged my fear of heights on the Peak but I declined the opportunity to go up the Peak Tower.
