Loving the World
After Facetime-ing my family, finding my clothes that were sent to the Laundry and a good breakfast, we headed out at 9am for our 1st Lecture on the Chinese Education System, with a professor at Shaanxi University.
We got to hear from Professor Li, an English Professor at the University. We really enjoyed hearing about the Chinese Education Reformation (1978) and the shift to "equality" in China. The test-oriented system is fairly amazing. They only require public education students to attend school through their 9th grade year. Curious. I will explain more later.
We lunched at an interesting, family style restaurant near the university. The restaurant was part of a "resort". The resort had a pool, bowling, video games and . It was eery quiet, worn and dusty and could have been on a scene from the Walking Dead. :) The best food was the spicy bread filled with spicy peppers. It was awesome!. The most "interesting" food was the spicy tofu balls. They were dipped in this orange sauce and looked pretty good. Holy Moly..terrible! Not even the tofu lover at our table had anything to nice to say.
After Lunch we ventured to another University and had a lecture from a high ranking official. he spoke no English and had to use an interpreter. The interpreter was a very nice college co-ed. She was a good English speaker. he was supposed to be talking about Principal training and evaluation in China. Dry, Dry, Dry. 2 hours in this lecture I was looking for a sharp stick to shove in my eye. I looked over at my very professional colleagues, and they were drawing, playing angry birds and one even looked like they were napping. Made me feel better. :)
After the lecture, we traveled to the downtown square to eat dinner. The lights at the square were beautiful. I will not go into too many details about dinner, but have a pact to not throw my colleagues under the bus. Suffice ti to say, there were many toasts. :)
The evening ended at the hotel lounge, where we enjoyed each other company, laughed, reminisced and just had a wonderful time. I am with a great group of educators. I feel very privileged to be a part of this experience.
Shi Shi!
