We've finally arrived in Varanasi after 3 days sailing down the ganges - which has been the most serene and amazing experience since i've been here! Our Intrepid group had 3 little wooden boats and a kitchen boat to row/sail us down the river and it was beautiful! Saw some burial rituals being performed where tehy burn the bodies by the side then put the ashes into the ganges. I felt a bit intrusive watching some of them, but they were quite impressive.
We camped for 2 nights in the tents, and arrived last night in busy Varanasi - which isn't as smoggy as delhi but just as busy - and chloe and i still are recieving a lot of welcome attention. Best thing is to just avoid eye contact and say NO! last night had the most hair raising rickshaw ride of my life - being flung everywehre down pot holes and banging into the side of cars - have never been so scared in my life! fortunately managed to find a resturant that served vodka, which was the best drink i've ever had!
Definately suffering from meat and alcohol deficiency - oh and CDD (chocolate deficit disorder) Have taken to wearing scarves to cover the afro - i think it's scaring the group i'm travelling with and it's definately scaring the locals - they're just not ready to embrace the 'fro.
We're now off to see a flower and candle ceremony down the ganges, it's suppose to be beautiful and tomorrow we're up early for a morning boat ride where hundreds of people gather on the banks of the ganges and make offerings to the sun. Then we're off to Agra and the Taj Mahal!
