San Diego, California
Well, we finally set off on our AOAL (adventure of a lifetime!) and began in Las Vegas, a crazy place! We stayed at NewYork NewYork, based on (obviously) the Manhatten skyline - we got upgraded to a strip view room (oooooh) on the 32nd floor - which was perfect, until the 3rd day when some stupid child put something on fire in the rubbish bin - we smelt burning, immediately alerted reception and in a mini panic (me, not Lou) escaped via the fire escape staircase - all 32 levels! Relieved to be alive (haha), we burst out into the hot dry Las Vegas air, only to discover that we did not escape a NDE (near death experience) but that a plastic bag had been smoldering in the bin next to the lift shaft. Exhausted by our heroic escapades, we relaxed by playing on the slots for an hour........ The best thing about travelling like this is we can change our minds at the drop of a hat, and after coming up with Mexico, New Orleans and Miami as possible next stops, we randomly picked San Diego - so hopped on a greyhound bus over to Southern California, where we have remained for nearly 2 weeks! It took a good 8 hours or so to get here, but the bus journey gave us a good chance to see Nevada and California - and by the time we arrived we were very happy to have somewhere to go - didnt matter that the hostel (whilst cool and the people were so so lovely) was like staying in a big warehouse, with no windows or ventilation, yikes! No, we had a ball there - went back to our teenage years with a keg party where we played 'keg pong' (I was useless so kept having to drink) - and met some really fab people.
Loving the americans - everyone is so so friendly - we were walking down the street in downtown San Diego and this guy who was out running stopped to ask us where we were from and to wish us a good day - bless. Honestly, the level of service you experience here is amazing - you get wished a good day left right and centre, and even in the grocery store you get asked if you found everything ok! We are still getting use to the nicey niceness but its very welcome!
We are moving back and forth between downtown SD and the beaches, which are about 10 miles north - staying at sister hostels Banana Bungalow (fab place, catered more for party going guests, needless to say we have developed the nicknames 'nanas' due to our endless Scrabble and card games) and Lucky D's - where the divine staff have given us a 4 bed dorm to ourselves! woo hoo! total luxury. We are going to stay here for another week, then head up the coast to LA then on up to San Francisco. We are looking to buy a car to give us our independence and to save cash.
All in all, having a fab time and loving the US!
