Finally making my way down to the start of the Camino, it's high time! I've had a good bit of easing into traveling, remembering (and relearning) how to get by with english and the odd ten french words, navigating maps, getting used to being mostly in my own (good! :-) company) and so forth, while still having a room and bathroom all to myself, a hair dryer and fresh towels, luxuries!
I am writing this to note how impressed I am with myself managing to plan getting from Dinan to Bayonne by train in one day with - I think! - two changes only. Regional train from Dinan to Dol, TGV (= really fast train) Dol to Paris and then Paris to Bayonne. Now from there I'd still need to get to St Jean, but I'll worry about that tomorrow!
Had to get up at 5 to catch the first train out of Dinan (an already impressive feat for a so-not-a-morning person) and had a very kind ticket operator in Dol who graciously explained all I needed to know - in English! He was impressed with my planning too :-)
There are much easier and quicker (and cheaper!) ways to get from London to St Jean Pied de Port, but why miss all this fun and scenery. Said she, justifying her meandering...
