NONG KIAW/MUANG NGOI NEUA 29TH NOV- 2ND DEC 2006
We left Luang Probang by local bus to Nong Kiaw, 3 and half hours. Nong Kiaw is a romote little town with the most amazing scenery, surrounded river and huge green mountains, where every turn looks like a perfect picture postcard and tourists are few and far between. The streets of dusty stone are filled with dogs, chickens and children playing happily. Locals wash in the river and peace and simplicity seem the way of life. We stayed one night in Nong Kiaw before leaving by boat one hour north to Muang Ngoi Neua on the 30th.
Muang Ngoi Neua is tucked away and cut off from regular roadways by a steep mountain range, meaning there are no motor vehicals in the village, which adds to the remote, slow paced feeling that surrounds you when coming here. Accomidation is cheap at just $2 US Dollars a night per riverfront bungerlow. There is only 3 hours of electricity a night in Muang Ngoi so its handy having a torch! It is a place to totally switch off, lay back in a hammock and take in the amazing scenery.
We stayed here two nights and apart from laying back and catching up on some reading we went off our selves on a five hour walk, passing some caves and into a local village, where the pace was so slow it was almost on rewind. We were the only westerners there so got a few funny looks, but everyone was very friendly and kept running up to us showing us various animals they had caught that day.
On the 2nd December we headed back south to Luang Probang for one more night before bussing 7 hours to Vang Vieng the morning after.
