We started as we meant to go on and had a beer at Bristol airport at 11.30am, we arrived in Amsterdam on Friday afternoon with our friends Emma and Tony. The sun was shining & we got the train then walked straight to our townhouse in the western canal ring.
Our house is brilliant! 'The Original Authentic Townhouse'. It is over 4 floors & has a kitchen, living room 2 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms and is really close to the canals & bars. The landlady cycled to meet us when we arrived to let us in and she had what you can only describe as a massive wooden box on the front of her bike for her two kids to sit in.
We went out for drinks that night around western canal ring. The canals are really pretty and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We sat in the sun on the canal then wandered around the area. Our favourite bar being Cafe 't Smalle which had loads of character & used to be a gin distillery. Tony and Dando asked for the beer special that the bar maid had never heard of!
We had a lovely dinner at a restaurant next to the canal. The food was really good. I had tomato and mozzerella soup to start and ricotta and mushroom ravioli in a sage butter sauce.
We then walked around the red light district. We saw girls dancing in their windows & adverts for various sex shows you could go & see! It was quite an eye opener! It was really busy with the streets full of people but I felt a bit sorry for the girls under their red lights as I felt like they were in cages and we were looking at them like animals. We went to a bar full of Rolling Stones paraphernalia, other customers included a man dressed as a willy complete with balls (which kept banging against Dando's head amusingly) and a group of men all dressed in shorts and fishnet tights!
Dando then got chatted up by a man in a bar we went to on the road where we were staying. "Wow open your mind." He blushed for 10 mins. I later saw the man chatting to a drag queen with the biggest wig on I have ever seen outside!
We evantually finished drinking beer and stumbled home. Turns out we were staying next to a gay bar called 'Le Prik' which was quite noisy at night. Glad I packed my earplugs! Xxx
