Hi,
Yesterday we went to Rotorua. A town full of geysers and steam coming up from all over the place.
On the way to Rotorua we stopped off at a couple of places. the first place being somewhere that breeds rabbits with extremely long hair, then uses the fur to make jumpers. It was very strange watching a rabbit being sheared!! Certainly another thing I probably won't see again. The rabbit was actually tied down as if he was on a spit the turned over until all the fur had been cut off (Lindsey - I don't think you would have liked this place). However no harm came to the rabbit, and apparently if they were not sheared they would die from the heat of their fur or something.
After that I went to a bird sanctuary place as I thought that I had better go and see a kiwi bird before I left NZ. I was surprised at how big they are - when they stand up straight they are as big (if not bigger)Â than a cat standing on its hind legs. I watched them getting fed - it was really cool.
In Rotorua there is literally steam coming up out of the ground all over the place. Also the town smells bad due to the sulphur. This morning I went to a Mauri village in Rotorua built between steam patches and a geyser. It was interesting to see how they used the hot water and steam to cook food and bathe etc. The pools of water were 100 degrees on the surface - so it doesn't take long to boil an egg!!
This afternoon we travelled to Taupo. On the way we stoped at a mud pool and a nice waterfall.
Tommorrow I head up to Auckland for my last few days in NZ before I go to South America. I have booked myself into a nice hotel for a bit of luxury before my South American adventure!
