Two of the most important words that you will hear in Budapest: thermal baths! Located in a park on the northeast side of the city, the Szechenyi Baths are an indulgent yet affordable slice of the essential Budapest experience. Because of unique geological conditions, there are over 120 thermal springs that provide mineral waters to the bath houses throughout the city. The great thing about Szechenyi is that the main baths are outdoors, so you can sit in 38 degree water while plumes of steam rise into the night air that is hovering around freezing. Inside there are a number of curiosities, including pools that contain a variety of mineral waters. The sulfurous pool was recognizable for obvious reasons, while others were evidenced by the differing shades of green and blue. There were also a number of steam rooms that ranged from a scorching 98 degrees to the more comfortable 50-60 degree variety. The custom upon exiting the steam room is to enter directly into one of the cooler pools that are kept anywhere between 16 and 20 degrees. Very refreshing! The most curious part had to be the aromatic steam rooms, where the air was heavily laced with scents such as menthol. Although it was strange at first, gradually it became quite enjoyable. If you ever make it to Budapest, we strongly recommend taking the waters!
