Hello hello! I am slightly hungover still (thanks Robert!) but will try and write coherently!
OK starting at the beginning, on the weds after we got here, we went and did an official tour of the Opera House...it was very impressive, although cloudy weather was a bit disappointing. It was so hot though! Anyway back to the tour...we had a very enthusiastic woman called Trish, and I now know more about the Opera House then I ever though possible! Seriously it was worth doing, and we got to see a rehearsal of the Symphony Orchestra in the Concert Hall which was amazing.
Next we went on a boat tour around the harbour and all the neighbouring areas, also very good. Got to see Manly, lots of very expensive beautiful houses, a few prisons and lots of places where sharks had eaten people! This really only increased our fear of oceans in Australia! I thought they were exaggerating but Robert informed me that there are actually loads of sharks in the harbour....agh! Sailing around all day was surprisingly tiring :-)
Ok on Thurs (in between the excitement of knowing we were going to see Kylie) we managed to walk over Harbour Bridge. Again pretty amazing. Lots of people running for some unknown reason! Took loads of photos of the views and then settled in a park in The Rocks to watch the Ashes with lots of exciteable Aussies! I can't believe they are kicking our asses so bad, it's embarrassing to be a pom here at the moment! We tried to cheer for England and got a few thousand death stares so gave up and went to Maccies for a caramel sundae.
Thurs night was one of the best nights of my life...Kylie is a little superstar! She did 28 songs live, danced a bit and generally put on a great show. She sang for about 2 1/2 hrs, considering she's recovering from chemo etc that's pretty incredible. Naturally we sang along loudly and danced a lot, much to the aumsement of the guys sitting next to us. But I wondered what two straight guys were doing together at a Kylie concert anyway! It is our mission now to find Kylie says Relax tee shirts (along with Slap the Goon!!!)
We managed to pick the only day it has rained in Oz in the last 30 yrs to go to Bondi Beach! Seriously, waiting an hr for a bus in the rain was like a trip down memory lane to Manc, esp when 3 then came at once! I managed to fall asleep on the beach thinking i was safe coz it was cloudy...I could now be mistaken for a not so distant relative of the lobster from behind! But as a pom it was obvious I was going to do it at some point, and it gives the Aussies something (else) to laugh about! Bondi was pretty cool, and in the end the sun came out so it was nice and not too busy.
Well the biggest news of the week has to be that Robert and I finally managed to contact each other, despite my mothers best efforts to foil me with numerous wrong numbers (I have had msgs from several random Australian blokes now, thanks Fi :-) We girls went out last night with Rob and a number of his work mates/friends/ random acquaintances and got fairly drunk...sorry Nana and Aunty Pat!!! It was fab anyway. Met them in a pub, which was amusing as I had told the girls Rob was about 30...obviously I was a little bit out ;-) Had a few drinks there then we took Rob and his friends to a backpacker hangout called the World. It wasn't actually too skanky, and I think Rob's friends appreciated being forced to do shots out of a teapot by us!!!!
We met a random gay guy who told us he would take us to a very exclusive (apparently) club called Ruby Rabbits. We managed to get in fine so I question how excusive it really was, but still fun nevertheless. And now comes a high point of the night. Guess which lobster coloured backpacker managed to sweet talk her way into the VIP section and 'partied' with westlife (until her friend was thrown out for being too intoxicated)!?!?!? yes thats right ....me. To be fair to Briony, she was absolutely fine and didn't deserve to get kicked out at all, but it was about 3am by then and thanks to Rob's hospitality we were slightly the worse for wear and about ready to go to bed anyway! In the end a great night was had by all, and I have a few v funny photos of Rob and me to amuse the Craig/Appleby family with on my return!
Today we managed to do nothing at all apart from eat and sleep, and eat again...I am currently planning to be in bed by half 8! Catching an early flight tomorrow to Melbourne, Neighbours on Monday....I cannot wait. I love Sydney though,I wish I could live here!
