Yesterday we finally made it out of India!!!
Our day started early as we woke the rest of our dorm (for a change) to get ready and we left the hotel at around 7.40am. Our first stop was, of course, Flurys! We were gutted to find the delicious rum balls hadn't yet arrived and after some umming and ahhing Sarah decided on a Chocolate Boat and a Sicillian Slice (layers of chocolate and biscuit). From here we headed straight into the 40 minute drive to the airport. The airport was a little disappointing but we managed to get a coffee to go with our chocolate purchases - which didn't fail to disappoint.
Whilst waiting for check-in to open we met a Canadian called Kirk, we gave us some great advice on Bangkok. After clearing numerous security checks we made it onto the plane and set off on time (for the first ever time in after 5 weeks in India!)
The flight was good and we managed to watch Friends and other British/US comedies and dramas and of course we had our final curry, which was quite nice, and not too spicy for Sarah! Dessert was a let down tho!
We landed in Bangkok 30 minutes early and new straight away that we loved the country! The people were so friendly and the facilities so much more modern!
Customs were easily cleared and after a brief ATM stop we headed, with Kirk into a taxi to the main Khao San Road area. On his advice we went down a backstreet to find some cheaper, nicer accommodation and we wasn't disappointed, the guy was saving us money already!! Amazingly on the walk to find a hotel Sarah bumped into a friends from Uni.
After a quick freshen up we went straight out into the town to soak up the atmosphere, and we were not disappointed. Street food and stalls selling everything you could imagine and cheaply and thousands of bars and restaurants most of which were showing the days football action (much to Laura's delight!).
Our first stop was for a quick cocktail before having a walk around the streets and settling onto other bars for more and more cocktails, in between a couple of spring rolls from the street vendors! We were also introduced to a drinking game called Mr Hoff, which we picked up very well and the beer went down surprisingly well!
We Met up with Sarah's friend again and danced the night away, neither of us of sure of the exact time we got back to the hotel but we are guessing around 3am!?
This morning was spent recovering a little bit from the night before and, yet again, Laura fainted! Unfortunately Sarah was not there to catch her this time and she got a nasty gash from cracking her head on the floor, other than that she escaped unscathed!
Following a much needed lie down and some toast and OJ we headed to the main site we wanted to see, the Grand Palace. This did not disappoint, the buildings were stunning, made out of gold and mirrored and multi-coloured tiles. We saw the Emerald Budda, who had recently been changed into his 'Winter Clothes', and we ended up in the coin and regalia museum which was slightly boring but interesting all the same. The place was full of bus loads of tourists which was a novelty too after seeing so few foreign tourists in India.
After completing the palace we took a slow walk back around the Khao San area, again stopping for Spring Rolls and a bread bun stuffed with sweet potato from the 7/11! We also hit the shops, Laura buying two bags and Sarah one, but we did get bargains!
In the late afternoon we headed down to the riverside and took a walk down the shores before heading back to the hotel to say bye to Kirk and to get ready for more shopping and street food, we sampled bbq pork and chicken, sausages, sweetcorn mixed with sugar, salt, butter and condensed milk (gorgeous!) and a chicken liver skewer (again, gorgeous!) before rounding it all off with a roti! In India a Roti was basically a chapati or simple bread, in Thailand it is so much better, it is a dough thats is rolled into a pancake filled with banana and fried with butter to make it crispy, before being covered in chocolate suace - heaven! After this feast it was an early night in preparation of our two day trip to Kanchanaburi.
