It's pouring with rain in NYC so we are sat in a Starbucks (for the millionth time) to write our last blog before we go to Camp!
Our hostel this time round has been fairly good; we had our own room which was clean and included breakfast, although it did resemble a prison cell even down to the lettered beds...I took 'A' my cell mate 'B'. The vast majority of the other inmates seemed to be from Holland; even though Tom insisted that they were "frenchies" (he was wrong of course!). These "frenchies" all seemed to be under 21 so had nothing to do in the evening apart from pile into the common area and make a right old racket. There were a couple of other people in there but none seemed comfortable; one guy couldn't even find a seat to have his dinner.....damn inconsiderate underage "frenchies"!? Other than this the hostel was ok, not as good as the other stops on our trip, but ok.
It felt really nice coming back to New York, and it was easier to navigate around now I am used to the grid system. On the agenda for this trip was meeting up with Georgia for lunch, Polly for dinner, Empire State, World Trade Center Memorial and Statue of Liberty - which we did!
Our highlight of the trip was defiantly Empire State, the views up there are amazing. We wanted to wait till sunset but it was 2 hours away and the crowds were huge and Tom wasn't really in the mood to be pushed and shoved by elderly Asian tourists. At the World Trade Center Memorial, tickets were free but the queues were huge. Great people watching (beaking) opportunities. One man in the queue was explaining how he was due in work the day of the attack in the building next door, but he called in sick. Everyone was listening to him, and it was interesting to hear his tale but we couldn't quite work out if he was a guide for a group or just a loud American. On the other end of the spectrum there was a man barely making a sound while he ate his apple, and when he got down to the core he put it all in his mouth and chewed, bloody barbarian! He'll have an apple tree sprouting in his stomach now, silly man.
During our time in America, we have noticed quite a few things:
1. Everyone thinks we're Australian - to the point where we now have Australian characters called Scott and Charlene.
2. There is a Starbucks on EVERY corner
3. You can get take-out anywhere, especially New York (which is amazing)
4. People cross the street whether the traffic lights are go or stop. It's a Russian roulette whether you get killed.
5. Tom is a faffer - it takes him at least an extra 20 minutes for us to leave once he's repacked his bag etc.
6. I am like a child - I need sleep, food and rest to stop me being grumpy.
7. We have both started using words like 'trash' and 'bathroom' with an American accent because no-one understands rubbish or toilet - and we don't dare ask for a 'bottle of water' as we get the blankest looks ever.
Off to get the bus now so this may be our last blog for a while depending on what happens at camp,
As usual, love to all and let us know how its going at home.xxx
