G'day mate, Welcome to Australia!
Lau speaking...
So, we flew into Sydney after a loooong wait and were welcomed by Lou's relatives Catherine and Tommie who had us stay for a week...what luxury! Home cooked meals (gluten free for Lou!), a double bed each, TV and beautiful views from their back porch. We saw all the usual sights- Harbour bridge, the Opera house and Darling Harbour and took a boat to Manly island. Tommie took us to Bondi Beach, on the record breaking hottest day of the year! It was here that Lou was starstruck when she saw Hugo from Home and Away. She acted smooth and cool by staring at him all afternoon. We also took a visit to the Blue Mountains, and were escorted by Tommie on our first 'Bush walk'! Just outside of Sydney we went to a animal sanctuary and saw our first kangaroos, koalas and dingos. Sydney was also where Lou had her very first gluten free pie!
Next stop was Melbourne and again we stayed with Lou's family, Noreen and Richard, and their dog Bella! We saw the sights of Melbourne, which in cluded Old Melbourne Gaol where we learnt loads about the legend that was Ned Kelly, the little rascal! Another day we met up with Laura's sister Natalie and her children on Bon beach and also went to a very cool night market. We were also able to visit St Kilda's festival. We sat out in the sun all day eating jacket potatoes and drinking cider, l, what heaven!
A city of firsts, Melbourne was where I had the pleasure of seeing my my first Huntsman spider as we sat in a cafe and was also where Lou had her first ever take away gluten free pizza! We visted many wineries and in Ballarat (just outside of Melbourne) we visited an old gold mining tiwn which looked very much like an old town from the Wild West. We then drove to Bendigo to visit Eilisand her family and of course some more wineries! Bendigo was also where Lou ate her first ever gluten free quiche! We then made a last minute decision to drive along The Great Ocean Road (basically a long coastal drive with some of the greatest sea views imaginable)! We hired an little automatic Red Getz and set off for 3 of the most amazing days! One highlight was the lighthouse at Airey's Inlet, which for those 90's kids amongst you was the lighthouse from 'Round the Twist'!! We also saw Gibson's steps, a huge secluded beach with mega waves and cliffs and the famous 12 Apostles, 12 massive rocks in the ocean. We finally drove back down the coast and stayed in Geelong in the worst hostel we have ever seen (worse than anywhere in Asia) which included wallpaper falling off the walls and crickets invading our second storey room.
It was then time to leave the south and head to Queensland. In Brisbane we were greeted by Laura's Pearce's mum and dad in Victoria Point. It was lovely to be looked after again and were treated to $10 steak and chips! They took us to the Botanical Gardens (where we saw lots of lizards and spiders) and to Mount Kuttha to see a view of the whole city. Next stop was Byron Bay and on the way John and Yvonne took us to a hippy town called Nimbin where weed is grown, sold and smoked and the police don't say a word!
Byron Bay was a great little surfing town where we met up with Jodie Hearnden and her friend Lisa. It was lovely to see people from home and great to see them in all their campervan glory! Jode was kind enough to cut our hair (it was needed!) and they cooked dinner from their campervan on the beach!
Next up the coast was Noosa. Very quiet place but lovely beach and friendly town. We made use of the cinema and watched the acclaimed, academy award winning The King's Speech. After just 2 nights in Noosa we moved onto Rainbow Beach. Although it was raining we headed straight to the famous beach and guess what awaited us when the sun tried to sneal through the clouds....A proper rainbow!!! Wow!
We then travelled to Fraser island, which we both agreed was one of our hightlights...
