For the past few days I have been to New Futures Orphanange with one of the girls I'm travelling with in Takeo, 2 hours away from Phom Penh. We spent some of our time at the orphanage, and also helped out a a local school. We all hired out push bikes and rode from the volunteer centre where we were staying, to the school which took us about 45 mins in the baking heat! i really enjoyed it, as there was no roads, just dirt tracks and we all followed a vague map that the volunteer centre manager put together for us. When we arrived at the school, it was small and in the middle of a farm! Pigs, dogs, chickens just running around everywhere! the little children were so sweet though and spole great english! there was 1 teacher for 100 children and he taught them all their subjects and english! The teacher made us 4 volunteers stand up and the front of the class and talk and sing to the children, then they sang us songs and kept saying "we love you new teachers"! It was soooo cute! Then when we left they drew us pictures and we put them in our baskets when we drove home! The orphanage was really nice too, as I wasn't sure what to expect really. They were there either as they have no parents, their parents obuse them or they can't afford to keep them. However, most of them were so nice and friendly, you wouldn't guess their background. I just spent my time talking to them (they spoke v good english), playing with them and letting them play with my hair!
Vic and I then took the bus back to the City to meet the other girls we're travelling with and staying at Top Banana hostel. First thought was that our room was like the opening scene of the film/book 'The Beach'! Even had the gap inbetween the ceiling and the walls starting! But at less than $2 each a night, who am I to complain! Later on that night, we took a walk to the central market and had some absolutely delicious street food. We ordered BBQ'd shrimp and squid, another first for me! We picked out our fish, then they BBQ'd it right infront of us! It tasted so nice too!! I had to peel off the shrimps legs and head and everything, then dip the thing in garlic and chilli sauce, which was also delic! :) After that, me, Vic and Bex decided to have a fish massage! All I can say on the matter is hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha It took me ages to get used to it! I was sweating all over and asking if it was the same amount of pain as a tattoo!! God help me if I ever have a baby!!!!!!! after 10 mins I actually really enjoyed it! LOL
Today we spent our last day in Cambodia visiting the S-21 museum and the killing fields in Phnom Penh. I dont want to talk too much about this as it was a truely horrific experience, and could have possibly been the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life. The Khmer Rouge regime was sick. Also very worrying to think it only happened 40 years ago.
On a another note, I feel the need to write down my best bits of my month in Cambodia:
* Eating crab @ Kep
* Koh Rong island - all of it
* Angkor Wat and the temples
* Moto day @ Kampot
* New Futures Orphanage
* Trying loads of new and different foods that I would never have done before!
* Buckets of Mekong and coke
