We decided to stop off at Noosa for two nights on the way to Hervey Bay. Noosa is a very small town with a gorgeous beach, shops and restaurants so we spent a few days just chilling on the beach. Also bumped into Emily and Becky again who we met in Surfers.
Arrived in Hervey Bay, weather was starting to go down hill a bit- the sun wasn't out, so there was nothing else for it- we decided to spend the day sat in a cafe eating cake! This place was nothing like we expected, the beach isn't really nice like all the other places we have seen and the atmosphere was funny.
Early start the following morning at 6am to have our briefing for fraser island and meeting our group that we were to spend the next 3 days with. Lucky us 8 girls and one boy! Weirdly, Becky and Emily who we met in Surfers then Noosa are actually in our van.
Sent us off to supermarket in our 4wd to try and shop for the whole 3 days- quite a hard task with so many people and a budget especially with a Swiss girl not wanting the same things. In true backpacker style we spotted some right bargains at the butchers and our groups shopping was half what the other groups were.
Headed off to the ferry terminal- although just made it in time as we set off from the supermarket 15 minutes later than planned and it was much further than we thought although Alan got us there in time.
Drove up to Indian Heads at the top of the island where we walked up to the lookout point- the views from here were amazing even though it was raining. As it is a sand island you drive on the beach and the inland tracks are all sand tracks.
We then drove back down the island to our campsite for the night which was actually a sand dune- the toilets were a spade and dig your own hole affair.
After setting up camp we had a few beers and our bargain BBQ before going to bed at 8. It was so dark and had been such a long day it felt really late. Some silly b*****s from another tour decided it would be funny to take the tent pegs out of our groups tents so they fell down in the middle of the night!
The next morning was another early one due to how hot it got in the tents. Although there was a choice to either stay and sweat in there a bit longer or be eaten alive outside by the huge sand flies!
That day we managed to see the Pinnacles, Shipwreck and Eli Creek- which when the water is high enough you can float all the way down to the bottom. Benedict drove for a short while today but even though she had been travelling in the car for 1 and a half days she obviously had not seen what side of the road we had been driving at as she proceeded to drive on the right hand side- one other van had to swerve round us in the sea. Alan did most of the driving this day- the poor b***** probably wished he hadnt come as when we got stuck on the inland track he also had to do most of the digging to get us out!
That night after our tea and mandatory beers we headed to bed. We were sharing a tent with Emily that had a huge window at the back that faced the trees, there was a full moon and the last we saw of Benedict was when she was heading to the bush with a shovel in her hand. All of a sudden she started shouting "Dingo Dingo Dingo"- Emily at this point sat bolt up right and asked why on earth she was shouting BINGO! We looked out of the window and there was about 4 dingos round the back of the tent. Nobody rushed from our tent to go help her as we all feared for our own safety!
Lake MacKenzie was on the agenda for the following morning, however, after driving down the sand tracks for about an hour there was a traffic jam and people were doing 3 point turns in the very small roads- one of the large bus tours had broken down and there was no way to get there. I think we must be the only group who has ever gone to Fraser and not seen one of the lakes that its well known for!
After spending an hour on the beach we were told there was a swimming pool that everyone could use, therefore me charlotte, becky and emily decided to go for a dip. It was a lovely place and when we realised none of the group were in there we started to look round and realised we had gatecrashed a 5* resort- although we quickly thought of a cover story incase we got stopped- " what do you mean- this is Lake MacKenzie isn't it??"
