Ko Lanta
We arrived in Thailand after an interesting journey! First we caught a ferry to Saturn, the onboard entertainment was a Thai film called Revenge of the Teeth - strangely about killer snakes! It was extremely gory and not exactly suitable for a morning ferry ride with loads of kids, however we loved it…especially the English subtitles, which were in some places hilariously wrong. We were actually gutted that we got to Saturn before the end of the film! After going through immigration we then caught a bus to Trang, this time the onboard entertainment was really cheesy Thia music videos with the volume turned up to maximum, it was bloody loud! After being subjected to 2 hours of this we then had to get a mini bus to Ko Lanta, luckily there was no onboard entertainment, just a standard shove as many people into a mini bus as possible malarkey! When we finally arrived in Ko Lanta we ended up finding a really cool place to stay which even had our own TV and fridge plus hot showers, luxury! We settled in and went for a walk along the lush golden beach, the beach was beautiful and the sea was so blue and clear. It took about 45 minutes to walk along the beach, we stopped off at one of the many beach bars and had a beer and watched the sunset. Stunning is an understatement! The colours were amazing and the sun was huge. We then went to a restaurant near our beach hut called Marina Resort and had the best food we have eaten so far since we have been away, in fact it was so good we ate every meal there for the rest of our time in Ko Lanta!
The next day we headed into the town centre, we caught a taxi, well when we say taxi we mean a motorbike with a rickety seating thing attached to it! The town centre was awesome and had so many market stalls selling very colourful clothes and accessories. Lorry was in her element and bought herself a lush sarong and some cool shorts, she could have bought a hell of a lot more. After looking around the markets for a few hours we bought some huge bottles of beer for under a quid each and headed back to store them in our fridge. After doing a bit of sunbathing we ate at our favorite restaurant and headed back to our room to drink beer and play cards! We ended up staying up till gone 2am. After a bit of a sore head in the morning we went to the beach to sunbath however after an hour or so the heavens opened and we had one hell of a storm, definitely the loudest thunder we have ever heard. It was like the beginning of the end of the world! We decided to stay another night in Ko Lanta as we saw a beach party was happening the following day playing house music so we fancied a good boogie. The party wasn't as busy as some of the ones we have been too but the music was awesome. We planned just to have a couple of drinks but had quite a few beers in our room before hand and then ended up drinking buckets of rum and coke at the party. On our way back we had to wade through a bit of water, a recipe for disaster and true to form Lorry fell over in the water and broke both her camera and phone! When we made it back to our hut it took us half an hour to get in as we couldn't open the lock! Next morning was not fun especially as we had to travel to Ko Phi Phi.
Ko Phi Phi
Lorry was doing her normal being sick thing throughout our journey to Ko Phi Phi, when we finally got there we bumped into Erica, the Canadian girl we met in Perhentian Isalnds, she was working at one of the dive shops, she was just finishing her shift so took us to where she was staying and we ended up getting probably the cheapest accommodation on the island! Lorry went for a nap whilst Hickey went to check out the place. Ko Phi Phi is awesome, there are no roads, just loads of little streets with countless stalls and an really buzzing atmosphere with bars absolutely everywhere. Its the most touristy place we have visited so far but we loved it. It also had beautiful surroundings, just our luck as we had no camera and didn't want to buy one on the island as it was expensive. However we did buy ourselves a couple of pair of sunglasses each (surprise surprise!) Our first night was a sleepless one as our window wouldn't close and we were smack bang in the centre of all the pubs! We ended up deciding to find somewhere else to stay the next day and got ourselves another bargain this time with our own shower, it was up in the hills and was really nice, plus we got the price down from 650B to 500B a night….result! We decided that we were going to do an all dayer on the beach and an all nighter in the bars, we need to start getting a tan big time so surprise surprise the day we decided to sunbath turned out to be a cloudy one! We still spent some time on the beach though as it was still bloody hot. We also went to the lookout spot, this is when we really starting missing our camera as the view is the best we have experienced on our travels so far. It was a bit of a steep trek to get there but totally worth it, we were going to stay for sunset but as we had no camera we couldn't bring ourselves to do it! That night we headed out into town, we bought a bucket of whisky and lemonade from one of the stalls, it cost less than 2.50! We just sat on the streets and drank it…classy! After that we headed to a bar playing awesome music, plus they had buy one get one free on vodka redbull buckets! We had a few of them and then headed to a half moon party, we stayed there for a bit and then headed home, just about resisting another half moon party on the way back! In the morning we ignored our hangover and literally did a 9-5 on the beach, our tan is getting better! We also checked out another beach called Long beach which was a lot nicer and the water was so clear we could see all the marine angel fish swimming right up to the shore. We played with our new bat and ball set and just chilled in the sea most of the day. The next day we went on a snorkeling and kayaking day trip. Its one of the best rips we have done and definitely the best value for money. We visited lots of different sights including Monkey Island (an island with monkeys on the beach), shark point (despite the scary name was awesome for snorkeling) and Maya beach (where 'The Beach' was filmed). We had a great day and tried kayaking for the first time and loved it so we will be doing that again soon. We also met a lad called Robin and lass called Kate and hot it off with them straight away, so after watching the sunset on the boat we got back to the island and headed out for dinner with Robin and Kate. As this was our last night we gave ourselves a 1 bucket limit as we didn't want another hungover traveling day. You can probably guess where this is heading, we ended up drinking countless buckets and ended up partying at a beach bar till 4am! Hickey lost his 4th pair of flip-flops within the last 3 weeks and Lorry broke her watch taking the tally to things we have broken so far to, an ipod touch, a camera, a phone and a watch!! Nightmare!
The journey to Karbbi was not as bad as we thought it would be, we were both pretty hungover and tired but the whole ferry was like that with people sprawled out everywhere! Just goes to show what a party place Ko Phi Phi is!
Krabbi Town
We deiced to use Krabbi Town as a stop off relaxing point before the crazyness of the full moon party in Ko Phangan,. There are no beaches in Krabbi Town, however the rest of Krabbi apparently have some amazing beaches so we plan to visit these when we return to Thailand at the end of our travels. We arrived in Krabbi Town and checked into a hotel that was recommended to us by an older couple we had met in Ko Lanta, it was a nice hotel and only cost 300B a night (6 quid), we headed straight for some food Hickey had his 11th Thai Green Curry in 11 days! We then went for a quick nap which actually turned out to be a 3 hour nap! When we arose we had a look around the town and were very impressed, a lot different to the Islands we have been use to but it had some really unique bars and the night market was just full of amazing food stalls. We actually didn't eat at the night market and opted for a side street vendor, this turned out to be a mistake as we were over charged for some very mediocre food! Next day we set out to find ourselves a new camera and ended up getting a really nice one which worked out to be around 50 quid at least half the price it would have been back in the UK. We then met up with Robin and Kate and had some lush food at the night market. We had quite an early night as we had to be up early to travel to Ko Phangan, little did we know the epic journey that waited for us!
Ko Phangan
What a nightmare journey, supposed to take 5 hours and took us 10 hours! We had bought a bus/ferry combo ticket from a travel agent which ended up being part of a scam! At various points in our journey people were trying to take more money of us to take us further. Luckily we were in a big group so we all made a stand and said no. So our bus/ferry combo ticket ended up being a mini bus to one travel agent, then 30 minute wait followed by another minibus to another travel agent, then an hours wait, then being put onto a back of a jeep and taken to another travel agent and another hour wait, followed by being put on the back on a tuk-tuk and taken to a derelict port and another 45 minute wait then a bus turned up and took us to another port where we finally boarded our ferry! When we finally arrived in Ko Phangan we were taken to our beach hut which we had booked in advance, the hut was really nice and had a Mexican restaurant attached to the resort so we had some really nice Mexican food that night and went to bed ready for the party of all parties the next day.
FOOL MOON PARTY!
We headed to Hat Rin early afternoon to buy our full moon outfits, literally every place was selling the most colorful outfits you can imagine. We looked around for ages and finally settled on what we wanted to wear, we also bought some face paints and some really cool accessories. We headed back to our hut and got ready and then went straight back to Had Rin. We had heard so much about the full moon parties and it lived up to its reputation, there as about 20,000 people just partying on the beach with loads of different stages along the beach playing different types of music. There was some awesome fire shows and even a skipping rope that was set on fire for people to jump over, we were tempted to get involved but realized we had already drunk far too many buckets to attempt it! The atmosphere was just amazing, at one point we went to our friends hostel which over-looked the beach and it was just a brilliant site seeing everyone partying. We also bumped into a French-Canadian couple that we had met in Perhentian Islands so partied with them for a bit. At one point we looked up at the moon and it was as if it was only a few meters away, it was so big and looked amazing. We took loads of photos and had an amazing night, we want to go again next month but don't think we can make it. We finally got back to our hut at 6.30am. The next day was a complete write off as we only left the hut to eat! Hickey couldn't wait for the next day as he had one hell of a Swindon surprise in store for Lorry!
