Day 30: 8/7/13
Today was a free day which was needed! For once, breakfast was included so we got up for it at nine and lots of others seemed to be there too. Breakfast was a strange concoction of toast, pineapple, rice and noodles. They had some strange things that we tried like rice cakes and rice porridge. The rice cakes were balls of mush really and tasted oniony. There was a spicy sauce to put over them and that made them taste better. The rice porridge was salty and tasted more like potato soup than porridge! It's good when its a buffet that you can try all these strange things!
We spent a little while in the room then organising ourselves. I had to rinse and wash some underwear to make sure I have enough to last me- little jobs like that have to be done when you get the chance!
The only possible activity today really was a boat trip to the islands but the weather is quite cloudy and looks like it could rain any time. The guide didnt reccommend us doing the boat trip as in this weather there are often storms so We just went to the beach then. There's a beach near us that we went to yesterday, but the guide recommended that if we were spending the day at the beach to go to Otres beach which is a tuc-tuc away. Myself and Ann-Marie went with an English girl called Amy and then we met the other group that we've been with mostly down there- Hannah, Steff, Hayden and Karen. The tuc-tuc driver wanted 6 for the trip but the guide said we should only pay 3 so eventually we got it for 3. He seemed disappointed like we were doing him a great disservice by paying a dollar each but when we met the others, that's all they had paid aswell!!
The beach was nice- little straw umbrellas and loungers all along it. The water was really close to the loungers so the beach was quite narrow. It was very pretty though- you could see some boats out on the horizon too and lovely green islands. We had been warned not to bring cameras or anything so I've no photos! Lying on the beach would have been a perfect time to write the blog but I didn't want to draw attention to mysel having an iPhone. (You can tell our guide has done a good job of scaring us- everything is locked in reception!!) It probably would have been safe to have them today anyway as there weren't many there. We took turns in the water anyway to mind our stuff. There were people over like a shot trying to sell us bracelets and things but they stayed away when they got the message that we didn't want to buy anything! I did end up buying sunglasses as the lugs of mine had gotten really wide somehow and if I moved they fell off me!
Most of the time at the beach I read my book. I went for a swim for a few minutes- it was so shallow you couldn't really swim but the water was really warm and really salty so floating was easier! We got a drink and some food after a while and then decided to head back. We'd been there about three hours anyway. We met Nicki and Andrew with Ian there too. It was funny because Ian wanted to even up his sunburn from before so he wouldn't put on any suncream- in the end be was bright red so I've a feeling he'll be in pain tonight!
We got a tuc-tuc back anyway and a few of them were going to the beach near us for a banana-boat ride and then getting a massage. I didn't want either so I stayed back at the hotel, caught up on the blog and had a proper shower.
Then we went for dinner. We went with the people we were at the beach with and the guide. We went back to the same restaurant as yesterday because it wasn't raining and we could sit out on the beach which was lovely. All the restaurants had tables at the beach with candles on them and there was the odd firework again so it was nice. Of course all the restaurants themselves are just like straw shacks and there's people everywhere selling bracelets and a few begging. We had a good meal though and plenty of chat! The English and Irish always seem to get on well. Karen and Hayden are Australian but Karen's parents are English so I think they have a similar sense of humour. We were about three hours sitting at the beach and then went back to the hostel to pack the bag for leaving at 7:30am.
