We catch an IC train from Brussels to Brugge and are there in just over an hour. I love this Eurail pass!!! The IBIS hotel is right next to railway station which is good for access but, bad for not being fully immersed in the cultural, historical centre.
It is a picturesque 15 minute walk into this canal town and again, we are gobsmacked by this next destination. We can now fully appreciate why Jess and Josh both loved it. It is all so surreal, so picture perfect: you might as well have your camera set to continuous shutter because every step warrants archiving.
The roads, the canals laden with geese and ducks and bordered by willows and a plethora of other delightful contrasting vegetation, the unbelievably beautiful buildings, particularly in the town squares....it's just all too much to absorb. I feel that I am experiencing sensory overload. You cannot really compare Brugge with Gent. A self-indulgent analogy: Brugge is like the standard European male with not a single hair out of place, Gent is a little like me: 'stuff hair dressers, I will always self-manage with the hair clippers' even though the outcome is always flawed....
There are so many outstanding historical buildings in Brugge, but on day 1, the standout is the Kathedraal Of the Precious Blood. It is truly unique and beautiful.
We stop for coffees and another sampling of Belgian delicacies and reflect that we are having difficulty with the pace of this trip: we need to slow down
