My first impression of Fiji - the heat, it's about 30 degrees :) My second impression of Fiji - going to a fire an knife show at my hostel on my first night and watching one of the guys accidently throw a knife into the crowd, narrowly avoiding decapitating someone!! Most of my trip to Fiji was not actually spent on the mainland. They have about 30 different resort islands off the coast of the main island, the furthest one being 6 hours away. It's a really unusual system - you get on a big boat at the main island that takes you close to one of these islands and then boats from the smaller islands come and collect you. You're in the middle of the ocean and they just throw your luggage from the big boat to the smaller ones :-s
When we reached these islands, the staff always stood on the shore and sang a 'bula' song to us (which means hello in Fijian). The people here are so amazingly friendly and happy! These islands are said to be the desert of Fiji, because they don't get much rain. I think I had about 2 evenings of rain my whole time there, so I have a nice tan now :D I'm sure when you think of Fiji you think of golden sands and crystal clear water, and that's exactly what it is! I did alot of lazing around and eating, but I also did sea kayaking, sailing, jewellrey making and went on a bush walk. The bush walk was probably one of the hardest things I've ever done. There were giant spiders everywhere and ants kept biting our feet. We had hardly any water and we were walking through a jungle on a mountain for 2 hours in this heat! But when we got back down, the guide chopped down some coconuts and we drank fresh coconut milk, which was such a good feeling!
I also did snorkelling. It's so beautiful under the sea with all the colours and different fish. I even saw a blue starfish. Unfortunately though, someone saw a sea snake which can kill you within 10 seconds of biting you and then I saw a fin moving through the water when I was standing on the shore, so I was too scared to go snorkelling after that! Last Sunday, we took a trip to a Fijian village in the Blue Lagoon (where they filmed the movie Blue Lagoon!). We got to go to church there, which was a cool experience. There were 4 churches in this little village. First I went to a Catholic church, where we all sat around in silence for an hour waiting for the service to start (they call it Fiji time). The Fijian women had to sit on the floor and the men could have the seats. Then I went to a happy clappy church. I enjoyed my trip to the islands so much, I decided to stay one extra night before going back to the main island. But that night I found bed bugs in my bed :( I was going to sleep on the beach, but it started raining really heavily.
I got back to Nadi on the main island yesterday, where I met a girl from Wales and we decided to go to these hot mud pools. It was so relaxing. Then we had a massage :) Today is my last day in Fiji before I head to Christchurch in NZ tomorrow to meet my sister. I've never been more excited to see her!! Until then, I'm going off to enjoy my free room upgrade :) Bye bye for now xx
