Georgetown was a really nice break from the beach. We had some really good food at the night market. The hawker centers we eat at are incredible. They are like the food centers in Singapore; we think we described them then. A big eating hall full of tables and chairs, sometimes shared if it's busy, and all around the outside are different stalls mostly offering only a few dishes but altogether there are hundreds of foods and nationalities on offer. So Sean had clay pot Thai pig liver noodles and I had Malaysian KeoyToaw, flat noodles and prawns and cockles in garlic. We went back the next night and had chicken, bean sprouts and rice. We also ate in Little India as I had a massive craving for thali! That was so good, but Sean was disappointed it wasn't quite authentic enough for him.
We only had one full day in Georgetown so we made the most of it. Up early for our free coffee. Proving Sean will get up early for anything free. Our guesthouse owner looked the spitting image of Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi. He was very insistent on the no shoes in the house rule and we were told off more than once. He was really helpful though and is mates with the owner of the Kuala Lumpur guesthouse we stayed at which is a coincidence.
Laura gave another stunning walking tour of the big sights in Georgetown. It was a lovely day and we strolled though the Colonial side of town much as the naval officers of 100 years ago might have. The town hall used to be called 'the white man's club' so you can see what kind of place it was. We saw the biggest clan house in Penang, which as far as we can gather is a place for Chinese people here with the name Khoo can gather and chill out together and be Chinese in a foreign country and maintain their heritage which is quite nice for the expats there, and also Little India which was lovely and so much calmer and cleaner than the real India! But the best Little India we've seen so far.
Off to another beach again tomorrow in Langkawi which is a duty free zone so for various reasons a bigger part scene than we've been used to. As long as there is some sun and sand and the occasional chilled Tiger beer, it's the place for us!
