So from Belgrade we headed to the coast of Montenegro. Formerly part of Serbia, Montenegro is now the newest country in the world after gaining independence in 2006. The whole country has only 500,000 people which is not surprising when you see the inhospitable landscape. The train there was beautiful it passed through 263 tunnels cut into the limestone crags and winded along canyons and over passes. Sadly when we get where we were heading, Budva, it was late and despite deciding we didn't like the busy resort town it was too late to head on so we stayed the night then headed to Kotor the next morning.
Kotor is only a few miles away from Budva but is a different world. Nestled at the end of a fjord and surrounded by mountains this walled town was so pretty (you may have seen it if you have watched Casino Royale). The harbour was full of vast luxury yachts which Gareth spent most of his time drooling over. One day we headed inland to Cetinje the formerly capital (it is now Podgorica-might be handy in a pub quiz). For a capital it is remarkably village like and little one storey cottage mingle with grand former embassies and palaces. We would definitely recommend Montenegro and sooner rather than later before it gets too touristy (knock on the door of the cottage near the bus station there and the old man will give you his lovely spare room as well)...speaking of getting too touristy next we headed to Dubrovnik...
