On Friday afternoon (9 March) we set off for our weekend away in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. John & Katie organised a lovely self-contained cottage for us all to stay in. It was once a church and has been converted into two cottages. We were staying in a little village called Thwaite and there was a little stream running right alongside the village, with a waterfall right outside our cottage.
That night we ate at the local pub, where the food was a bit more upmarket, but absolutely delicious. In the pub we got talking to a local game keeper who worked on an estate nearby raising grouse. Loche asked him how much it is for a day on the estate and he replied it's by invitation only and costs around 80,000 pounds a day! They get movie stars and royalty staying there.
Saturday found us heading north west to the Lake Districts National Park to Lake Windermere. This is a lovely lake with ducks, geese and swan all gathering around waiting to be fed. There are a number of cafes and pubs to get a coffee or some lunch. Loche and I couldn't get over the number of marinas and boats moored on the lake. It's not a very big lake, but there were a large number of vessels moored. It gets extremely busy in the summer months. We hired a little boat for an hour and the kids loved steering us all over the lake. On the way home, we stopped for a pint at Tan Hill Inn - Britains highest pub. We were greeted at the front door by a lamb, who loved getting pats from the kids. From there we went to a village not far from where we were staying and had dinner at the Farmers Arms. Towards the end of the night, Cara started singing 'row, row, row your boat' and then went off to find some locals to sing it to. They were very impressed!!
Sunday we went to Keld and had a walk down to the waterfall - it was a bit of a muddy and slippery walk, but well worth it when we arrived at the falls. From there we drove to Bolton Abbey where we had a ride on a steam train, before heading home for a quick bite at the local Indian restaurant.

Jeffo Would you still be considering getting a caravan? Has your accomodation been reasonably priced, good quality and interesting/fun?
Nicole Hey Jeff, we are back to considering a caravan now, just to save a bit on accommodation costs. When we went to Scotland it cost us between 50 to 70 pounds a night, which we just can't continue doing. We have looked at the option of renting houses through Europe but I think a caravan will give us a bit more flexibility. As you know though, this may change yet again!!
