Our first stop in Slovenia was at a caravan park that had (of course) a thermal pool complex attached to it. We stayed here for two nights and spent a whole day at the pools cooling off after a couple of very hot weeks. From here we went to the capital of Slovenia - Ljubljiana.
We didn't spend a lot of time in Ljubljiana, we had a drive through the town and just spent one night. Worth mentioning though was the pool complex next to the caravan park. It was all outdoor - heated and there was heaps of people and a bar and great DJ music playing - it was such a fun and lively atmosphere we stayed in there all afternoon until it closed.
The next day we drove the hour or so to Bled, which we had seen photos of and it looked stunning. It didn't disappoint - Bled is at the foot of the Slovenian Alps and has a castle perched on a cliff overlooking a lake with an island in it with a church on the island - it is picture perfect. Google Bled and you will see what I mean!
The first caravan park we tried was right on the lake but it was that busy we struggled to even find a place to park the car while we checked if they had room. They only ended up having a pitch for one night and the whole place was very busy and stressful to be around. So we decided to try a park we saw on the drive in. We went back to it and were told we could stay as long as we liked. This place was the complete opposite to the first one. It was in a very large wood, surrounded by the river and you could camp wherever you wanted. While we were checking in, Loche got talking to an English family who were checking in at the same time. We ended up running into them again while we were trying to find a place to set up. We got talking and decided we would camp next to each other. We ended up spending a week here and had a great time catching up with Dean, Karen and Reuben. Oddly enough they live close by Loche's relatives in Yorkshire and we will be catching up with them again back in the UK.
One day we all went for a drive through the Slovenian Alps. I'd been reading about the Vrsic Pass in the Lonely Planet and it sounded like a good drive to do. The road was originally built by Russian war prisoners in World War I and is now known as the Russian Road. The upper parts of it are unpassable during winter. When we arrived at the top of the pass, we found sheep on the side of the road and some lovely places to take some great photos.
We drove down the other side and stopped in Bovec for a lovely lunch of pizza and pasta. While we were waiting for lunch Cara was playing and managed to fall over and scrape her whole shin bone. We finished lunch, stopped in at a few shops and then continued driving. Karen worked out the best way back to Bled and as we were driving we realised we were going to go via Italy!! So we went over some Italian alps and passed a beautiful aqua lake along the way. We decided to stop for a quick dip, but Loche and Reuben were the only ones that ended up going in - it was a bit too cold for the rest of us.
Cara must have picked up a bug or something because through the night she started vomiting. She wasn't herself the next day so we took it easy at the caravan park. The next night she developed a temperature, which was quickly fixed with some panadol. So we were still okay to head off the next morning.
From Bled we drove south west to the Slovenian coast (the whole 43 km's of it). The caravan park was right on the beach, but it wasn't the nicest beach. Loche started getting a toothache a couple of days after we arrived so the reception gave us the name of a dentist nearby. He got his tooth looked at and we left for Croatia the following day.
