Today was really windy on Caye Caulker, and there was a strong current in the water, even in the Split which is usually really calm. So after a lunch of grilled Caribbean kebabs and citrus shrimp sitting on swing seats overlooking the sea, I managed to persuade Matt to borrow the bikes from our accommodation to explore the island. (This was after I had plied him with rum and coke!) He didn't seem very keen at the idea, but they were free so he didn't have his usual excuses at the ready!
We headed off on two old fashioned bikes which were way more comfortable than the ones at Coba, and after a brief moment where Matt said he couldn't do it, we pedalled off down to the south end of the island. We weaved in between people walking and on other bikes, and managed to dodge a few golf carts - good job the island motto of Caye Caulker is 'Go Slow', otherwise Matt might not have left the hotel!
It was so much fun, and I think even Matt was secretly enjoying it, especially when we got to a clear area and he sped off in front of me. We rode down all the back alleys that we hadn't had the chance to explore in the daytime, and stopped to watch the sun setting over the beach. When we were cycling down a wooded area, loads of tiny crabs scattered from the path, and we saw a sign reminding us that the island has two cemeteries but no hospital! Matt took this as a sign for us to turn back so that he didn't die from a bicycle-related mishap, so we stopped to reward him for being a brave little solider with some home-made Belizean ice cream - Yum! :)
