Just afew days!
It dosnt always take you long to relise the places you would like to revisit, i depart from roasdale farm tomorow im quite relluctant to be mooving on, however extremly excited about the scenary i will be visiting next. But yes ive been hear since friday and really have enjoyed staying with the people i am with and have gained knowledge and learnt afew things whilst being hear! Today has been another busy day, with more drenching and the mooving of sheep, ive seen new places on the farm once again and i appologies to you and myself for probably not taking as many photos as i should have of the farm and working but a camera is not always on hand whilst working with the sheep and as ive said its sometimes nice to to view everything from a camera scrren and to wright and have the images as memories in your head that you can describe through words, But as i leav tomorow i will fill up the memory card with photos before i leave.
I have found the farm very interesting, finding out that the carrying capacitie of the sheep is roughly 6 to an acear, the types of sheep on the farm are Romneys' originally from the south of england in kent, a sheep sooted to the climate, farley wet with damp vegetation. The other type of sheep has been line bread and is a Growbolk with is made up of romney, pole dorest and texal cross and the growbolks are a registered breed. Ive learnt a little bit about the genetic side of things with various genes monitored in the sheep, one being the inverdale gene witch cuase high fertility so a highly desired gene, the female and male can be carriers of the gene, however it is dna recorded through blood tests as you cannot mate two carriers as the resulting females with be infertile. The 2 teer system is used mating one with out the gene with ewe lambs who carry the gen and this can over lift fertility rates by 20%. There are similar types with types of genes realated to meet quality's also.
The drenching of the sheep is usually for worms but added minerals are commonly added, in areas where certain soils lack certain minerals this is supplemented eaither into the drench or into vacines such as flexidine witch is an iodine based vacine. Its been common that in the southland area people used to suffer from goiter witch is increased glands in your neck has a result of a lack of iodine connected to areas where gold was found and soils lacked this mineral and so the appearance of iodised salts. And the simalar acours in sheep called white muscle. (sorry if information is not 100% accurate ive been taking notes and from memory of conversations) But just afew things that we have been disscussing.
Now i pack my bag again and get ready for bed number 6 as i head to deep cove witch is at doubtfull sound. I will be leaving for there in the morning and getting there late afternoon after getting the boat accross.
So new places, new people once again.
