I have classes every day in two seperate places. in the mornings (i only have
class mon tues and wed in the morn) I am at the UAQ (university) and at night
from 4:30 to 6 or 7:30 (depending on the day) I have class at la escuela de
gabbi. It is the official branch of IUSI here and is really nice. It has a
real name but everyone knows it by la escuela de gabbi (even the taxi drivers!)
We eat comida (lunch) at 2:30 every day and have merender (translated it means a
light dinner) at 8 or 9. It is a very interesting schedual but I am getting
used to it and am getting enough sleep and water.
The weather is not like i expected. It has rained every day here and we have
several gigantic lightning and thunder storms. When it rains some streets flood
because it is raining so hard. The buildings are not air conditioned because
everyone keeps their windows open... which is interesting because hardly any of
the windows have screens. I have several huge bug bites because of this.
I like my house a lot, it is quite airy and has four floors. Its ironic
because I came here expecting a totally different way of living but it is much
the same. I have the top floor to myself and have my own bathroom. I wash my
own clothes and dishes as well as make any food that I want to take with me for
the day (primarily breakfast... have you ever tried eating mayonaise with
chilies on a sandwich at 7 in the morning?? Its kinda gross.) My senor and
senora are very nice and my senora and I can communicate fairly well. My senor
tends to mumble and i have a hard time disceting his words but im getting better
at it. Im sure that you can tell by my spelling that I am having difficulty
writing in english :) I cannot speak very well yet and it feels that with every
day im here, my spanish gets worse! They tell me that feeling will go away
withing 3 weeks. My senora cooks very healthfully using very little grease and
the foods she cooks is very similar to what i would eat at home.
I am getting lots of exercise because I have to walk to and from the bus
stations and wherever else I want to go. The busses are really confusing and
there are no set scheduals so I just leave my house super early and hope that 1)
my bus comes by and 2) they are willing to stop and pick up a gringa. My first
solo trip to school was quite an aventure as I got lost and then my bus passed
me twice before one finally picked me up. I barely made it to class on time.
Others have had it much worse than me, Bria got lost on campus today for over an
hour and go so mixed up that she didnt know where she was. My senora lets me be
very independant and after the first time to school (in which she rode with me
and showed me where to get off) she has not come with me nor driven me anywhere.
My clothes are okay but I wish I had more. The small mom and pop specialty
shops are cool, but I just wish that I could go to safeway or wally world and do
a one stop shopping trip. I have already spent quite a bit of money between
buying necessities and paying for food, drinks and taxi rides. We have had to
birthdays in our group since we got here and therefore have gone "out on
the town" twice. Yes I did drink and No i was not drunk to the point of
being impaired. (not sure this is the right word). If you go on facebook ull
see pics but dont freak out. I am being responsible and have figured out that I
dont like feeling like crap :).
This saturday my senora, two of her grown kids, their spouses and I went to
their ranch house. It was really nice but I didnt understand what my senora was
telling me and I translated it as we were going to a ranch to go shopping (for
fresher produce i guess) and then we would come back to the house. I was wrong
and I spent all afternoon with their family (sure it was fun but I felt awkward
because I couldnt understand what any of them were saying let alone actually
respond). I was planning on writing a bulk email on sat but this is my excuse
:). Yesterday we went to the nearby pueblo (town) of Bernal where we climbed
the biggest boulder in mexico. I know, whoot whoot. This was supposidly
supposed to have stairs and I had pictured the assent as being like that of
Multnoma falls. I was wrong. the "stairs" were part of the boulder
and there were some very sketchy parts. Chelsey (the girl from taiwan) and I
only went halfway up before turning back because 1) the air was too thin to
breath properly, 2) it was really steep and 3) we didnt know how we were going
to get back down. We managed, very very slowly and spent the rest of the time
exploring the pueblo. I bought my first souviner, a turtle with a multicolored
opal shell.
Anyways, I have to do my tarea now, so I will talk to you all more later!!! I
love u all soo much!
