I'm sat among belle mamon (?) and three aunties all gossiping in Creole. I now feel I have become a temporary part of the family which is proving to be great fun even if I don't understand much.
Last night we went round to Belle Mamon's house, she is 80, as she loves cooking and wanted to cook us a meal. She lives with her daughter in law and her granddaughter (her son died) and next door is another daughter and family and Loga is her daughter (who im staying with). So we were all crowded into her kitchen and served delicious food. I chatted to Vishagen, a 16 year boy - good English and cheeky in a friendly way - very relaxed among his family laughing and joking. Belle Mamon had managed to buy a few crabs and so asked me (via Loga) if I wanted some. I of course said yes, and was served some very very small crabs in a delicious curry sauce. So I crunched and suck out the minute amount of flesh and apparently she was impressed I knew how to eat crab! Not sure the small amount meant it was worth it ! The rest of the food was delicious.
So we hatched a plan to come to Flic en Flaq to another sisters house, on the west coast today. So arrived about 4, went for a swim and then all the women went for a wander around and has dinner (see pocture). Loved it - real Mauritian life. Public beaches crow crowded with locals all gathered in groups usually picnicking or eating street vendor food and going for a swim - great to see it's not just for tourists.
Earlier today I took a bus to Grand Baie, in the pouring rain but managed it - and hired a car from the hotel I am staying in with Kath next week. A little Micra match automatic. The hotel we are going to stay in looks very lovely. Didn't think I would be able to cope with luxury but maybe I will! Also by going there today, it means I know how to get there when I pick Kath up after a long flight and easier to return the car.
